The Platte County Democratic Central Committee met on Thursday February 21st at the Platte Count Resource Center. Preliminary plans for the Spring Fling were discussed. The location will be the Argosy Casino on April 13th. The Committee approved the date to allow time to reach out to unions; details to be worked out in the next month. Wanda Park reported that the Events Committee had a first meeting and was exploring the possibility of organizing a series of issue based meetings as an outreach mechanism to connect to the community at large.

 

Paula Willmarth reported that Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker is the new Missouri Democratic Party's Chair and Lauren Gepford is the new Executive Director. She reported that the highest priority of the Party is finding candidates to run for every position in every election. To become a card-carrying member of the Missouri Democratic Party...$35 per year; seniors (age 65+) and young Democrats (age 18-25) are only $25. Paula also asked for support in running for reelection to her position as Trustee of the Platte County Public Health Department Board. She is one of four people running for three seats in the April 2nd municipal election. School Board Elections will also be on the April 2 ballot.

 

This year Kansas City will be electing a new Mayor and City Council. Half the current City Council is running for Mayor plus an equal number of outsiders. Watch for forums to keep you advised. The non-partisan primary election will be on April 2nd. The top two candidates will face each other for the general election on June 27th. No matter what happens between now and then, we will have a new Mayor and City Council. Two guest speakers made presentations following the business meeting. The first, Victor (Vic) Abundis, a teacher at Park Hill High School announced that he has initiated FEC filing to run as a candidate for the 6th Congressional District. He said his experience includes working as staff in a Congressional office in Washington D.C. He told us that Julian Castro urged him to run against Sam Graves. The current leadership of the National Democratic Party is determined to have a Democrat running in every race. He is working on a website at www.vicforcongress.com . The second presentation was by Candidate for Mayor of Kansas City Phil Glynn. He spoke about his priorities of building communities by bringing together public and private investments for family and Senior Citizen housing, hospitals, childcare centers, and critical infrastructure.
