GEORGETOWN, KY - OCTOBER 8, 2018 -  Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Farm in Georgetown, KY, has received a generous grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®)  to build a hoop barn for winter roll bale storage.

Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen made the announcement today.

The grant, part of the ASPCA® Rescuing Racer's Initiative, will help support the winter care of over 120 horses based on the organization's main facility. Old Friends has received previous grants from the ASPCA®, which were used for run-in sheds and paddock fencing.

Old Friends provides a dignified retirement to more than 200 Thoroughbreds whose racing and/or breeding careers came to an end.  Open to the public daily by appointment, Old Friends also has two satellite facilities: Old Friends at Cabin Creek, in Greenfield Center, N.Y. and at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, KY

The hoop barn construction, done by Kentucky Hoop Barns of Raywick, KY.,was completed this month and storage has already begun.

"We are so grateful for this funding," said Blowen. "Our retired Thoroughbreds live out most of the time, and a constant supply of hay is crucial for their warmth, their well-being, and their good health.

"The addition of this new barn  will helped us prepare early for the coming cold weather," Blowen added. "We appreciate the support and confidence the ASPCA® has in Old Friends to continue its mission."
