We look forward to serving you this year.

NEW STATEWIDE SUPERVISOR CERTIFICATE
In order to maximize success, supervisors and leaders in the State system require a thoughtful preparation process. Leaders are selected after a long and careful process, with the hope that the leader will be highly effective at motivating their team and producing excellent outcomes.

Highly effective leaders emerge from a combination of two factors:

1. Targeted leadership development

2. Opportunities to lead

The New Supervisor Certificate more than satisfies both criteria.

Cohort 1 of the Supervisor Certificate training has been scheduled for August 5, 12, 19, and 26. Additional cohorts will be scheduled throughout the year. You can also schedule private sessions for a group in your agency, if you are planning to hire multiple supervisors. The benefit of scheduling a private session is that you get to set the class dates.

Contact COE with any questions about scheduling private certificate sessions.  The table below is provided to help you to see how this new certificate is different from the previous versions of the course.

As part of our commitment to serving all state agencies, COE provides access to the files for New Employee Orientation (NEO) and Supervisor Training.
In FY 21 there are three ways that your employees can participate in NEO and Supervisor Training. :
  1. Delivery within agency. The materials for this course are available to state agencies, so that they can deliver this class using internal resources. Check out Courses from Center of Excellence.
  2. Register for an open enrollment certificate program with COE, and attend with a mixed cohort from multiple state agencies. Take advantage of the online Open Enrollment Schedule .
  3. Schedule a cohort for your team only, and have COE deliver the classes on your schedule.
EIGHT NEW CERTIFICATES IN FY21
One of the key findings from the 2019 State of Colorado Employee Engagement Survey was employee's desire for more growth and development opportunities. COE has responded and is happy to announce many new and improved certificate programs for FY21. Certificate programs are a series of classes with a common theme. They aren't just a collection of classes. Each certificate is carefully designed to expand the participant's depth and breadth of knowledge in the areas of Agile, Lean, Leadership, Peer Leadership, Supervision, and Customer Service. Students complete each certificate in learning cohorts, in which all members of the cohort complete classes together, for the duration of the program. Cohorts enhance critical thinking, group interaction, learning transfer, and provide opportunities to practice skills from the program that become highly useful in the workplace.
We have built a unique element into each certificate program. Leading others begins with leading yourself through a process of self-awareness. Each certificate program includes a behavioral assessment and individual debrief to better understand personal motivations. Completing the self-awareness assessment at the beginning of your program will give you insight into your own behavior and help you to integrate learning from the courses you complete into your behaviors on the job.
Certificate programs are a great way to address continual learning for several reasons. First, by enrolling in a certificate program, learners commit to a learning journey. Second, certificate programs develop a growth mindset vital to independent problem-solving. Also, certificate programs model the importance of continual development. Finally, certificate programs are bundled to be cost-effective, saving you nearly 50% compared to purchasing each class separately.
We know everyone is facing a tight budget year. We are confident that these certificate programs are the best investment you can make in your people. In FY21, all of the courses that are scheduled by COE will be delivered online.  If you want to schedule an in-person training, please contact COE to discuss this with us.
In FY21 COE has a goal to deliver 8 new certificates:
  • Statewide Supervisor Certificate- available now
  • New Employee Orientation - available now
  • Agile Certificate
  • Lean Certificate
  • Customer Service Certificate
  • Leadership Certificate
  • Peer Leadership
  • Individual Contributor Certificate
As additional certificates become available, you will be able to register on the COE Open Enrollment schedule .
NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION
In a growing economy, the State of Colorado is faced with the challenge of continuing to attract and retain the best and brightest to our workforce. Once the hiring process is complete retaining talent becomes the priority. New employee orientation has proved to be the most effective strategy to support employee retention. When a new hire begins work, their focus changes from "Can I get this job?" to "Do I belong here?" Without participation in New Employee Orientation, you hope all of their concerns will be adequately answered. The revised New Employee Orientation, takes away the element of chance and has been updated so that participants receive immediate affirmation of three things:
  1. Feeling welcomed, informed, and valued as a State of Colorado employee
  2. A firm understanding of state policies & procedures
  3. Excellent knowledge of resources supporting new employees
You have invested a lot of time and energy into making the correct hire, why not increase their chances of success by sending them to New Employee Orientation?
New Employee Orientation classes are available on the Open Enrollment schedule. This training costs $175 per person, and will be delivered online.  You can also request COE to deliver a New Employee Orientation class for your team if you are planning to onboard a large group of employees at one time.
CHANGES ARE COMING TO COE
We are excited to share changes in the COE operating model. DPA has recently requested common policy funding to support the following intended outcomes:
  • Increased access to training and development for all State employees through a common policy funding model
  • Leveraging price agreements to obtain competitive rates from training vendors with no additional fees
  • Progress toward our vision of being an employer of choice.

As a result, we have made some changes that will take place this year.

What will I notice first? Online only, open-enrollment classes have only been scheduled through September. We will add more classes after a careful assessment of the first quarter enrollments. In the past, we have cancelled almost 80% of the open enrollment classes. In the future, most single-day open enrollment classes will be discontinued so that we can increase our focus on the classes that are requested directly by agencies.

Does that mean in-person sessions will not be scheduled? For the immediate future, classroom, in-person sessions are only available on request. COE is happy to work with you to plan and deliver an in-person class for your agency.

Will the course catalog be changing? Yes. COE has redesigned every course for online delivery and added new classes that address changes we are all experiencing in working from home. In addition, you will start to see the new certificate programs appearing on the schedule.

What can I do to maximize my training budget? Purchasing a certificate program is the most cost effective and efficient learning method. Most certificate programs are less than half the cost of purchasing classes individually.

Will there be any other price changes? Yes! COE has lowered the cost of many existing classes. We have also designed brand new courses that are shorter in length and cost much less than before.

What else do I need to know about COE? We are here to serve you and your team's development needs. We have diverse experiences and a wide skill set. Our mission is to help. Please reach out today and see what COE can do for you.
