Mall on Duval Grand Opening Was a Huge Success! About Week 2
MALL ON DUVAL WAS LOVED BY ALL
The citizens of Key West, their guests and visitors came out in full force to celebrate the inauguration of Mall on Duval during its Grand Opening weekend Feb 15, 16 and 17. Three blocks of world-famous Duval Street was transformed into a pedestrian-only mall. It was a huge success! The weather cooperated all three nights. Key West's newest radio station, Party 105.7FM, broadcasted remotely near Petronia Street and helped give away $200 to three lucky winners across three night plus 15 other gifts generously provided by the businesses of Duval Street.
The pilot program continues this weekend and every Friday and Saturday night from 5pm to 12am through April 26 & 27. That's the rest of February and all of March and April.
RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY
The ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked-off a spectacular weekend. Mayor Teri Johnston and City Commissioners Jimmy Weekley, Sam Kaufman and Mary Lou Hoover celebrated the launch of Mall on Duval. The streets were crowded but comfortable, with not a vehicle in sight. It gave everybody the opportunity to slow down and talk and enjoy the evening air, friends and new acquaintances.
There was an electricity in the air on Duval Street from Fleming to Petronia. If you were there, you felt it. If you weren't there, well.... there is always this week!
LOGISTICS
The thru streets will remain open (Fleming, Southard, Angela and Petronia) and police will begin to close down the 500, 600 & 700 portions of Duval Street starting at 4:30pm and then they will re-open those sections by 12:30am. Approximately 7 portable bathrooms will be provided each weekend, including one for the handicapped.

Priscilla Coote gives us more of what we're craving, that sunny afternoon at the beach whenever we want it. Her large and vivid oil paintings draw us into her glorious reality of warm sun-dappled sands draped with lush palms. Our fantastical beach cottage may be in the picture, or perhaps some colorful skiffs to take us away. And always, the transparent waves lapping the shoreline, as only Priscilla can paint them.
She is known as the Water Painter of the Keys, having made the liquid that surrounds us into her own area of special study over the past two decades. She delights in portraying it in various lights, angles and depths, gladly accepting its challenges to describe its ever-shifting forms and colors with oil-based pigments on a two-dimensional surface. Many viewers say that they have the sensation of water lapping at their toes as they gaze at a Coote canvas.
Included in the show are several large studio pieces compiled from numerous studies made onsite, "en plein air". Accompanying them are some of the studies themselves, which provide a glimpse into the mind of the artist.
In addition to exhibiting regularly at the Gallery on Greene and teaching locally, Priscilla exhibits in marine art shows in museums and galleries around the country. She is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

Key West Art & Historical Society hosts life drawing exhibit and reception at Fort East Martello Museum
Key West Art & Historical Society invites the public to an exhibit opening and reception on Saturday, March 2 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm at Fort East Martello,
3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd.,
that showcases the talent of Annamarie Giordano and fellow Life Drawing artists. Giordano has led colleagues in Life Drawing sessions at Fort East Martello Museum for several years, guiding them during the weekly Tuesday three-hour workshops held in the Museum's "White Room."
For those interested in joining the weekly Tuesday workshop (11:00am - 2:00pm), sessions are $25 for Key West Art & Historical Society members and $30 for non-members, paid in class. Classes feature nude models in short and long poses and are open to all levels and mediums. Some materials are be available on site for purchase if needed.

Bound by their Israeli roots, pianist Alon Goldstein, cellist Amit Peled, and clarinetist Alex Fiterstein formed the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio in 2005. Today, the ensemble's performances reflect both the special gifts and originality of the three artists as soloists as well as their marvelous sense of ensemble and love of chamber music. The New York Times praised the ensemble for displaying "the kind of spotless technique that keeps the attention focused on the score rather than the vagaries of the performance." MICHELE BYRNE
Michele Byrne is known for her impressionistic palette knife paintings done mostly en plein air. She travels extensively to teach workshops and participate in plein air painting events across the country. During the past two years, Michele has painted in Cuba, Manhattan, Key West, California, Arizona and Wyoming. She has won numerous awards for her work. Recent awards include the 2018 Landscape Exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in NYC, and President's Choice Award in the American Impressionist Society's 2018 Annual Exhibit.
Liliedahl Productions has released two instructional videos of Byrne's palette knife work, and she will be a Faculty Demonstrator at the Annual PleinAir Convention in April 2019.
Michele received a B.F.A. from Kutztown University and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After working 20 years as a graphic designer she turned to full time painting in 2001.
Byrne's most recent project explores a new topic -
The Fabric of America from a Woman's Perspective. "My goal is to explore the complex and loosely woven intricacies of the fabric of American women. I hope to reveal and honor cultural histories through impressionistic pieces tied together by a common thread. Each portrait depicts one strand of the grand tapestry of humanity embodying the beauty of oneness within the power of collectivity. The pieces weave together women's unique historical realities and their mythical connections.
The inspiration for this project evolved from the glaring reality of issues of race and immigration in America. These fraught implications sparked a compassion for new directions in my figurative pieces and process. Women from diverse backgrounds became the subject of my series to open a dialogue about individual perspective and our ties to one another.
Through my art, I hope to create a civic conversation among us that celebrates perspective and brings forth the power of hope and the recognition of strength in contemplating our universal tapestry."

Blind Spots" exhibit at The Studios of Key West reveals modern slavery through imagery and art installations
On Thursday, February 7, The Studios of Key West welcomed the public to the Key West premier of "Blind Spots- Modern Day Slavery Exposed," with a special opening reception in the XOJ Gallery. The traveling exhibit is part of a multi-faceted project developed by Key West resident and activist Erika Biddle to encourage action against human trafficking and child exploitation.
"This strikes home as much as any other violent act that we see in the world today," says Keys to Be the Change Founder and exhibit sponsor Heidi Golightly. ""Blind Spots" offers not only awareness but inspiration for concrete actions that people of all ages can take to combat this worldwide epidemic."
The exhibit includes images and text by renowned photographer U. Roberto (Robin) Romano portraying
child laborers from across the globe (that have since been freed and rehabilitated)
, art installations by local artists Cricket Desmarais and Gretchen Mills, ceramics by the Florida Keys Community College Mudpie Club, the work of several participating local students, and artwork from local teen traffic victims.
"I
n recent years, reports that Monroe County children have been victims of sex trafficking targeted by groups from the mainland have shocked the community," says Biddle. "It's a problem that has remained largely out of the public eye, at least in the world's richest nations."

Studios also hosted a film screening of "Children of Bal Ashram" o
n Saturday, February 9
, a film that documents the work of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kailash Satyarthi, who liberated and rehabilitated more than 87,000 children from child labor, slavery, and trafficking. A Q & A with director Len Morris and a discussion about what actions can be taken to protect the innocent will follow.
In addition, the outdoor exhibit "Bought and Sold" by Kay Chernush will be presented by ArtWorks For Freedom at the African Cemetery on Higgs Beach, a location selected to honor individuals who were abducted to be sold as commercial goods but were rescued by the U.S. Navy in 1860.
"As the mission of Keys to Be The Change is to empower young people to realize their full potential while taking action to create positive change in the world, we are eager to support this project in hopes that our community will band together to put an end to human trafficking once and for all," says Golightly.

CONNECTIONS PROJECT
As well as being connected by the iconic Overseas Highway, the 125-mile-long Florida Keys island chain also is connected by a vibrant community of artists. From now through May 3, art lovers can view a travelling 24-foot mural featuring the work of close to 400 creative spirits during a series of exhibitions throughout the Keys. "The Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys" comprises nearly 400 individual canvases measuring 6 inches square that were provided to artists and arts-minded residents.
Their resultant works - produced in mediums ranging from oils and watercolor to photography, mixed media and quilting - showcase subjects including birds and sea life, palms and waterfront scenes, abstract visions and local landmarks.
"The mural's 'road show' tour from Key Largo to Key West celebrates the longstanding connections between the communities of the Keys," said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, which spearheaded the project. The next opening reception is Friday, March 1 at the Shady Palm Art Gallery, located at 2888 Overseas Highway in Marathon, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Florida Keys Community College's student ceramics club, Mud-Pi, invites the community to its annual Mud-Pi Dinner on Wednesday, March 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus. As per tradition, attendees of the fund-raiser will select their own student-crafted ceramic bowl to keep as a commemorative souvenir. Admission is $30. The funds raised will be used to purchase materials and equipment that allow Mud-Pi to continue to beautify and enrich the community. For more than 20 years, the students of Mud-Pi have created dozens of ornate ceramic wall murals and fountains that grace many locations in the Keys and provide the College's Key West Campus its signature aesthetic. The department also hosts young students, elementary through high school grades, as well as special needs groups to introduce them to the fine art of pottery.

The Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration month-long series of events set to begin March 4
In celebration of Tennessee Williams, the Pulitzer-prize winning literary icon that moved to Key West in 1949 and remained a resident for 34 years, Key West Art & Historical Society presents the "Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration," a month-long series of arts and cultural events set to take place from March 4 through April 1 at multiple Key West venues. In recognition of Williams' patronage and devotion to the Monroe County Library in Key West, this year's celebration theme is "The Library."
This yearly festival of events includes a limited-ticket, kick-off celebration, plein air painting, poetry and short story writing contests, lectures, museum tours, film showings, live theater events, and a birthday party complete with cake and bubbly to honor the life and accomplishments of Williams, whose rise to stardom began with "The Glass Menagerie," and continued with "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," and other dramatic masterpieces.
Literary and visual artists can immerse in creativity while competing for cash prizes and acclaim by entering the Tennessee Williams Plein Air Painting Contest, taking place in downtown Key West on Saturday, March 16, and/or poetry and short-story writing contests, both of which are accepting online submissions until March 1.
On Friday, March 6 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Tennessee Williams Museum founders Dennis Beaver and Bert Whitt will open their Whitehead Street home for a celebration kick-off party with an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, and entertainment. Tickets are $90 for Society members and $100 for non-members.
On Friday, March 14 from noon to 1:00pm, at the Custom House Museum, theater director, dramaturge, and author of opera librettos Stephen Kitsakos presents a Lunchtime Lecture illuminating Williams' later one-act plays. Titled "Tennessee Williams: Eroticism & Experimentation," tickets are $5; seating is limited, and early registration advised.
On Friday, March 15 from 7:00-9:00pm at Key West Theater, guests can raise a glass to the literary giant with acclaimed mixologist and cocktail columnist Philip Greene, co-founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans, during his spirited presentation "An Evening with Tennessee Williams." Green will mix and share recipe demos of Williams' favorite
drinks and the folklore behind themalong with preferred selections enjoyed by his friends F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ian Fleming, Raymond Chandler, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, Dorothy Parker, and Ernest Hemingway. Advance ticket purchase suggested.
Other upcoming Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration events include Curator-led tours of the award-winning Tennessee Williams Museum (the largest collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia available in the world) at 513 Truman Ave., Monday night showings of Williams' classic films at the Tropic Cinema, performances of two one-act plays at The Studios of Key West, and a March 27 Tennessee Williams birthday party at the Tennessee Williams Museum, to include contest award presentations, bubbly beverages, and birthday cake.

present retrospective of Key West wood artists in "Out of the Woods"
Key West Art & Historical Society joins
artists, galleries, and organizations across the island in the Tom Majors Tribute to Wood- a month-long, island-wide celebration of the creative potential of wood.

Out of the Woods: A Retrospective of Key West's Wood Artists," Key West Art & Historical Society's contribution, will feature several celebrated Key West woodworking artists including Papito Suarez, Frank Balbontin, Mario Sanchez, Norma Renner, Tony Barcelo, and George Garcia in the foyer of the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
A B-25 bomber during World War II, followed by a long career in public works, Majors spent his retirement crafting simple yet elegant functional objects in wood. The Fund established in his name serves and honors Key West artists and programs that work with wood.
The celebration is coordinated by The Studios of Key West and made possible by the Tom Majors Endowment for Wood Artists.
