MARYLAND LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The legislative season in Maryland up and going in Annapolis. AMTA Maryland has a bill coming up that we will share with you once it is officially sponsored and active. There is another bill that we want you to consider today, and we would appreciate your feedback.

The Maryland Board of Massage Therapy Examiners has submitted House Bill 166 to the General Assembly. The bill includes minor changes to definitions  and clarifies requirements around LMT status and continuing education (this part is very similar to legislation we have been preparing.)

HB166 also adds a significant new requirement, a Massage Establishment License, which would require application, fees, and renewals for any business that is providing Massage Therapy services in Maryland.  From what we understand, this is from a sole proprietor, up to a larger business.  This license would give the board the right to inspect and oversee, with a variety of requirements that a Massage Establishment would need to meet.

While we cannot speak for the Maryland Board of Massage Therapy Examiners, it is our understanding that these new requirements are a way to bring oversight in a new to fight human trafficking.

This bill is set for a house committee hearing on  Feb 1st at 1pm. Please email Sabrina or Amelia with any questions, comments, or concerns.
