YOUR BUSINESS. BETTER.

The 890,000+ small businesses in North Carolina employ 1.6 million people and account for 60% of the private sector workforce and 45% of the Gross State Product. The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) SBTDC serves small businesses and entrepreneurs in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, and Pender counties. The goal of the UNCW SBTDC is simple: to empower business owners and entrepreneurs to make businesses in southeast NC more competitive and more profitable. As described at www.sbtdc.org , we help for-profit businesses in all industry sectors to start and grow with personalized business counseling assistance and specialized services such as international business/exporting, selling to the government, and technology commercialization.

An example of an SBTDC client is Jud Watkins of Wrightsville Beach Brewery located in Wilmington. Recently, the 2019 North Carolina Small Business Handbook was published and featured four NC small businesses. Congratulations to Jud and his team at Wrightsville Beach Brewery for being selected to be one of the businesses highlighted.

If your small business needs business assistance, contact your Business Counselor or email [email protected] today. Your Business. Better.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS A TOOL FOR economic growth

Contributed by Jamie Stalfort, Business Launch Specialist
Recently, I attended the NC IDEA Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Summit in Raleigh NC. The conference connected all kinds of people from across the state who work towards stimulating entrepreneurship in our communities. Over the course of the two-day conference, one common theme seemed to keep reappearing: entrepreneurship is an excellent tool for stimulating the economy.

According to the Kauffman Foundation, new businesses, not small or big businesses, account for nearly all net new job creation in the U.S.

One of the success stories from the conference was that of the Marion Business Association's "Growing Entrepreneurs Marion" program, which is a program that guides entrepreneurs through an eight-week course on starting a business. At the end of the program, each student will have the opportunity to present a business concept to the team for consideration for a $5,000 small business grant assistance package. Between June 2018 and 2019, Marion reported 21 new brick and mortar businesses. In 2018, McDowell county was moved from a tier 1 (economically distressed) county to a tier 2, a sure sign of economic growth.

While some think that moving a plant into town will solve all of the economic woes, the numbers show that entrepreneurs drive growth in their communities. Let's celebrate our small business startups and entrepreneurs.

Contributed by Hallie Hawkins, SGS Counselor
Strategy. Growth. Sustainability. Isn't that want every business owner is looking for when he or she considers the future of their company? The SBTDC has regional Business Counselors that support this business growth. In addition, the organization has a group of professionals that can assist specifically with Strategy, Growth, and Sustainability.

The Strategy, Growth, and Sustainability program is a statewide targeted service of the SBTDC. SGS offers focused dedicated mid-size business services in the areas of strategy and growth, with the goal of providing services that enhance a company's competitiveness, stability, and resiliency to economic fluctuations. SGS services are delivered by a team of experienced counselors located in select regional centers with assistance from SBTDC local and specialty staff as required. The SGS team coordinates closely with our local offices to service clients in the most effective and efficient way.

If you would like to stay in touch with the team talk to your UNCW SBTDC office about working with the SGS team.  We are in the midst of updating the website.  To get interesting information and stay up to date on business trends, sign up for your newsletter.  http://www.sbtdc.org/growthservices
