FEBRUARY .... Valentine's Day, Ground Hog Day, Presidents' Day ...... and my father's birthday which happened on the 13th.  This year, in celebration, my son posted a picture of his much younger self with his "Granddaddy" on Facebook and started a stir of conversation.

One of my cousins passed on a story that went this way. "My mom told me the story about when he (RHS) was a kid, he surgically removed the stink sac from a skunk and took it to school. Broke it open and the school was shut down for the rest of the day." Winter Haven High School (?) has never been the same. My son, "He had me gaff one of those firm, volleyball-sized jellyfish so he could taste it." Mark Hinson, contributor to the Tallahassee Democrat, "My first ostrich (meal) was from him." But son-in-law John Keith has the all-time best story ever of "just go down (in dark, swamp waters) and feel around for the alligator with your feet." Out of the FB conversation came "the apple does not fall from the tree" and that he would be proud of you. Yes, that apple fall, which totally skipped me, re-birthed itself in my son "Jim". And now he is making apple pie of our granddaughter. With each Facebook/photo sent I see that apple tree blooming. With these photos, I can connect with the RHS that I knew and loved. So, what about your apple tree?  Are you the tree or the apple?

It turns out that my news around town section of the last email was not filled with "fake" news but shortly around sending time of the newsletter, some things changed.

First, I was remiss to ACCIDENTALLY leave off Jo Ridge Kelley Fine Art's move into the old Burr Studio/Goblin Lane spot. The studio features artwork/lessons by Jo as well as artwork, jewelry and pottery by daughter Keri Hollifield. If you are a long-time visitor to Waynesville you might remember Jo and Ed Kelley owning Ridge Runners. Besides works by Jo and Keri, you will be able to purchase the renowned, downtown Waynesville, snow photographs taken by Ed Kelley.

Second, Simply Delicious Desserts, owners Debi and Rick Hall, have decided to move into Three French Hens location rather than Main Street Mercantile's spot.  Funny story of ho w I found this out! Nothing travels faster than some misinformation. This will put yummy treats dangerously close to us but at least they will have 7AM coffee and breakfast offerings.

Word of coming ....... a chocolatier, home accessories store, a delicatessen, a coffee shop ..... but I dare not promote ~ because tomorrow that will all change. Publix and Ian and JoJo's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant DID open!

Big news at Twigs and Leaves Gallery is that we have a new hire to fill Becky's spot. Tiffani Watts comes to us as a familiar face on the street. She knows more people than I do. Tiffani brings to the table a wealth of knowledge concerning digital marketing, an intriguing, life background, and a captivating smile that reflects her enthusiasm. Together, we look forward to your meeting.

Spring is around the corner. After a very successful season, Waynesville Gallery Association's Winter Arts Smokies Style, final event "Luck of the Art" is in March (see information below).

Vicki Sawyer

"My college art classes, graphics, doll making and years of painting murals are like puzzle pieces.  Those pieces are delightfully fitting together now as I focus on painting in acrylics and oils.

In my childhood, several people influenced my love for nature.  On our many walks, my storytelling grandfather would fascinate me with the names of plants and their purposes.  My mom's childlike delight in even the simplest things taught me to be visually aware.  My dad gave me my love for birds.
Most of the murals I painted featured birds, insects, animals, grasses, and wildflowers.  Painting murals gave me an opportunity to display the things I learned to love as a child.

On a walk a few years ago, it occurred to me that if birds could build nests, then they could make hats.  This thought has been the inspiration for many bird and animal portraits.  My current works take what I enjoyed in murals and put them onto canvas.

With each painting my goal is to evoke feelings of peace, joy, and often humor. If I can positively impact someone with my art, then I have reached my ultimate goal - to serve."
