Get to Know Some of our 2018 Colorado Teen Book Con Authors!
We asked each of them a series of questions.
Here are a few of their responses...
|
Why do you write?
Cynthia Leitich Smith:
To entertain, to celebrate, to talk back, to work through life’s big questions, and most of all, to connect with young readers.
Colleen Oakes:
I write because I know that I have stories inside of me that I want - NEED - to share. Writing has always been an escape for me, but even more than that is the pull to help be an escape for someone else. Books can change the world, but even more importantly, they can change a single heart. I write to change a single heart.
Emily France:
I don't have the option to quit. I've tried! It never works. Characters come to me constantly, like guests I never invited and for whom there are never enough groceries.
|
What is your favorite word?
Cynthia Leitich Smith:
Idiosyncratic.
Colleen Oakes:
A toss up between whimsical and macabre.
Emily France:
Zafu.
|
What is your favorite line or phrase from one of your own books?
Cynthia Leitich Smith:
“I may be heaven-sent, but I’m not perfect.”
Colleen Oakes:
"Dinah was learning quickly that what was right and what must happen weren't always the same thing."
Emily France:
"
Fears are like clouds drifting by a mountain.
Watch them.
Tend to them.
But know
You're the mountain."

Bookseller
|
I love my job! As a bookseller I get to bring readers and books together which is so rewarding. And working author events is a great chance to connect with authors, it makes the book feel so much more real. I’m big on reading SciFi & Fantasy! Hobbies? Of course I like to read, but I also love cross-stitching, and am a cycle enthusiast!

Write a
Book Review!
Have you ever walked through a bookstore and seen little cards sticking out of shelves with book reviews? Have those reviews ever made you want to buy a book?
Those cards are called shelf talkers, and we're looking for teens to write shelf talkers for their favorite books. Your friends and family -- and a lot of total strangers -- can see your reviews on the shelves at Tattered Cover. How cool is that?
To write reviews, send an email to
Kristen Gilligan with "Teen Book Review" in the subject line.

Teen Writing
Group
Teens come together to share and critique writing, often with a nationally published young adult author as a mentor and participant. An incredible opportunity for aspiring teen writers! Free and open exclusively to teens.
Meets that last Sunday of each month. This is free and open exclusively to teens. Email
Kristen to RSVP.

Teen Advisory Board
This is a group of book-loving teens who meet every month or so to plan and produce programming for anyone excited about YA literature.
Board members have the opportunity to use their creativity, social media skills, and enthusiasm for books to help with all aspects of event promotion, planning, and execution; introduce (and hang out with) authors at events; write book blurbs; give book talks; get FREE advanced reading copies; and even help select authors who come to the store for events or visit schools.
It's fun, rewarding, and a great resumé builder. Currently, we meet at our Aspen Grove and now our Colfax locations. For more info, read our
TAB Info & Application
. To sign up for the TAB, email

Host an Author for Free at Your School!
I mean, who doesn't love a school assembly? Seriously though, Tattered Cover can bring an author into your school to speak to smaller groups of English or writing classes, or a full school-wide assembly.
The best part is that's there no cost to the school. If this sounds interesting, just connect us with your school librarian or principal.

"
The Chaos of Now
is an intriguing story about a boy named Eli who, while in high school, gets a mysterious invitation to join a team for a hacking competition because the team's other member had committed suicide the year before. Eli, while in trying to get out of it, realizes that he’s in too deep when he discovers a conspiracy about Jordan -- the team's deceased member. I enjoyed this book a lot, it had plot twists, family drama, and the added element of romance. The book was unlike anything I had read before and had a satisfying ending that closes the story nicely." --

Pan writes with eloquent, lyrical style that creates a poignant book. You will feel every emotion Leigh feels and be able to picture everything she thinks and does with clarity. Overall a beautiful and highly recommended read." --

ABOUT THE BOOK
The nightmare of the outbreak is finally over, but Cat’s fight has only just begun.
Exhausted, wounded, and reeling from revelations that have shaken her to her core, Cat is at a breaking point. Camped in the woods with Cole and Leoben, she’s working day and night, desperate to find a way to stop Lachlan’s plan to reprogram humanity. But she’s failing--Cat can’t even control her newly regrown panel, and try as she might to ignore them, she keeps seeing glitching visions from her past everywhere she turns.
When news arrives that the Hydra virus might not be as dead as they’d thought, the group is pushed into an uneasy alliance with Cartaxus to hunt down Lachlan and fix the vaccine. Their search takes them to Entropia, a city of genehackers hidden deep in the desert that could also hold the answers about Cat’s past that she’s been searching for. But when confronted with lies and betrayals, Cat is forced to question everything she knows and everyone she trusts. And while Lachlan is always two steps ahead, the biggest threat to Cat may be the secrets buried in her own mind.
