Pain Management Collaboratory Builds on Success of NIH Collaboratory
The NIH-DoD-VA Pain Management Collaboratory, one of the first joint initiatives of the NIH, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, is supporting 11 pragmatic clinical trials of nonpharmacological approaches to pain management in military and veterans healthcare delivery organizations. In a new video, Drs. Wendy Weber and Dave Clark discuss this innovative initiative, one of several new efforts using the model established by the NIH Collaboratory and building on its successes.
NIH to Announce Funding Opportunities for Pragmatic Trials in the Opioid Crisis: The NIH will announce new funding opportunities for embedded pragmatic clinical trials that address pain management and the opioid crisis. At least 5 awarded projects will join the NIH Collaboratory as phased UG3/UH3 cooperative research agreements. The funding opportunity announcements will be published in early December.
NIH Collaboratory Distributed Research Network Enables Large-Scale Analysis of Abnormal Cancer Screening and Follow-up: Researchers used more than 100 million person-years of curated claims data to assess screening and follow-up rates for colorectal, breast, and cervical cancers. The data were obtained from national and regional insurers participating in the NIH Collaboratory's Distributed Research Network.
Summary of Workshop on "A vs B" Pragmatic Trials Now Available: A recent NIH Collaboratory workshop explored "A vs B" trials, embedded pragmatic clinical trials that test existing, viable treatment alternatives where there is uncertainty about which treatment is best in which populations. A workshop summary, including expert advice and real-world examples for implementing these trials, is now available.

Trial Spotlight
Guiding Good Choices for Health (GGC4H): Evidence-based parenting interventions shown to prevent behavioral health concerns—from drug use and depression to delinquency and violence—could improve adolescent health outcomes if implemented widely in pediatric primary care. A new NIH Collaboratory Demonstration Project, the Pragmatic Trial of Parent-Focused Prevention in Pediatric Primary Care: Implementation and Adolescent Health Outcomes in Three Health Systems (GGC4H: Guiding Good Choices for Health) is a cluster randomized trial that will test the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing Guiding Good Choices, a universal evidence-based anticipatory guidance curriculum for parents of early adolescents. The trial will be implemented in 3 large, integrated healthcare systems serving socioeconomically diverse families. Watch a video interview about the study with co–principal investigator Dr. Richard Catalano, and read more about GGC4H.

Featured in the Living Textbook
In pragmatic trials, healthcare system partners typically deliver the interventions and collect the data. In a new chapter of the Living Textbook, Team Composition, learn about the importance of carefully considering the roles of potential team members, including which roles are essential and who will fill them.
