ASES: Learning Black History through Puppetry
Arbor Station 4th graders spent the last week learning about famous African American historical figures while also learning the art of puppetry!

Art teacher Katie Callan and the 4th grade teachers partnered with the Center for Puppetry Arts for to provide an unforgettable experience that encompassed standards in visual arts, theater arts, and social studies. A professional puppeteer worked with the students for 45 minutes every day for a week. Some of the puppets will be used in the annual Black History performance later this month.

"Our students loved working with the 'Puppet Dude,' also known as Jeff Domke from the Center for Puppetry Arts," said Principal Melissa Joe.
7th Graders Have Fun Studying Genetic Traits
Seventh grade students at Fairplay Middle School are using Crazy Traits Modules as they learn about genetics and patterns of inherited traits. The innovative learning tool and inquiry-based lessons are boosting the understanding of how genes are passed from parent to child with investigations and digital learning experiences. Crazy Traits was provided through a grant by the Douglas County Education Foundation.

In addition to discovering how some traits have two forms -- a dominant form and a recessive form -- students are also learning that some traits do not follow the rules, how probability affects an organism's genetic make-up, and the concept of genetic engineering.
