MadREP's Support on Site Searches Helps Land Three Major Wins

MacDon Enterprises Inc. Proposed Facility,

Phoenix LLC, Eurofins and MacDon have all found homes in Dane County after extensive site searches led and supported by the Madison Region Economic Partnership.
On October 30th, Phoenix LLC hosted US Representative Mark Pocan and held their ground-breaking event to build a state-of-the-art neutron imaging center in Fitchburg, WI opening in mid-2019. This will be their first non-reactor facility offering commercial neutron imaging services.
This month, after buying Covance's food testing unit, Eurofins Scientific, a global life sciences company based in Europe, announced plans to stay in Wisconsin and build a $33M research and development complex in the City of Madison's Center for Industry and Commerce.
Also this month, MacDon Enterprises Inc. a Canadian manufacturer of farm harvesting equipment, received an approval recommendation for an outdoor storage area on the site where it will construct a new 15,992 sq. ft. Research & Development facility in Sun Prairie. MacDon will begin construction of their new facility in early 2019.

Madison Region Economic Development Professionals Receive Prestigious Awards
Ed Lee, Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) Senior Vice President, has recently been the recipient of two impressive awards.
"Ed has been an incredible partner on behalf of the Urban League in our respective organizations' joint Economic Development and Diversity Summits over the past five years," said Gene Dalhoff, MadREP V.P. of Talent and Education. "The success of that event is in part a direct reflection of Ed's many years of dedicated work in diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives in the Madison area."
On November 20, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin announced that Lee is the recipient of the 2018 Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award. The award was created by the Common Council to honor Madison residents who exemplify Jeff Erlanger's model of fairness, openness, and civility in public discourse. Earlier this month, during ULGM's 50th Anniversary celebration, the 2018 Whitney M. Young Jr. awards were presented to Edward G. Lee and Betty Banks for their work in the community. The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award is given by boards of directors of Urban League affiliates across the country in memory of the great civil rights leader and former head of the National Urban League. Young was one of America's most charismatic, courageous and influential civil rights pioneers who worked tirelessly to gain access for African Americans to good jobs, education, housing, health care and social services.
In addition, two of MadREP's esteemed colleagues have garnered national attention for their economic development talents. Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Tricia Braun and James Otterstein, economic development manager for the Rock County Development Alliance, were recently named to Consultant Connect's list of "North America's Top 50 Economic Developers" for 2018. Both will receive the award at Consultant Connect's ECONOMIX event in Nashville in December.

Cybersecurity Career Opportunities
State and Federal Agencies need cybersecurity internship applicants. The Wisconsin Department of Administration is hosting a 1-hour cybersecurity educational and screening program for students, graduates, and individuals with IT skills that are interested in learning more about paid cyber security internships. The event will be held December 5th at 2:00 p.m. at Edgewood College in L2 above the Library (1000 Edgewood College Drive).
Come learn which State and Federal Agencies have multiple cyber security internship opportunities. If you are a private company with interest in partnering with the DOA and Cyber Education Wisconsin Initiative on similar cyber internship programming, you are also encouraged to attend.

Cities Where You Can Still Live Close to Work... 4. Madison, WI
Although cars are still the most common mode of transportation, Madison commuters have more diversified preferences than other cities on this list, with 9.3 percent taking public transit, 9.9 percent walking to work, and 4.1 percent commuting by bicycle. Madison-area companies are finding ways to drive down the number of opioid prescriptions while overdoses are on the rise statewide. Kiio is a business with a digital therapeutic system for managing back pain. CEO Dave Grandin, speaking at a Wisconsin Technology Council discussion held in Madison yesterday, said Kiio is helping employers save money on their health plans while improving outcomes for patients.
Life Sciences:
FluGen brings in more money to get ready for more studies of its universal flu vaccine
FluGen is just finishing one clinical trial of its universal influenza vaccine and the Madison company already is padding its finances to help pay for another one.
FluGen has received $5.6 million in debt financing from a total of 36 investors, according to documents filed with federal regulators.
The money will go toward manufacturing more vaccine to start a study next summer, CEO Paul Radspinner said.

After buying Covance food testing unit, Eurofins plans to build $35M complex near Dane County Regional Airport
Eurofins is new to Madison, but its employees are not. Eurofins bought the Covance Food Solutions business from Covance parent company LabCorp in August for $670 million cash.
Covance Food Solutions has about 850 employees worldwide, including nearly 400 in Madison, which is the largest of its 12 sites, Eurofins spokesman Andy Campbell said.
Information Technology:
Virtue Solutions aims to improve care for elderly through wearable device
A Madison startup is looking to provide unseen protection for the elderly while delivering information on their vital signs to caregivers.
Virtue Solutions has created a wristband the size of a large watch that's equipped to measure vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, sleep quality, location and fall detection. It's also tamper proof and water resistant.
Advanced Manufacturing:
Foxconn receives 325 submissions for Smart Cities contest
Foxconn Technology Group's first Smart Cities-Smart Futures competition received hundreds of submissions.
The Taiwanese technology company received 325 submissions from higher education students, faculty and staff throughout Wisconsin during its application period, which ran throughout the month of October.

Rural Business Development Grants (RBDG)
RBDG is a competitive grant designed to support targeted technical assistance, training and other activities leading to the development or expansion of small and emerging private businesses in rural areas that have fewer than 50 employees and less than $1 million in gross revenues.
RBDG funds must be directed for projects benefiting rural areas or towns outside the urbanized periphery of any city with a population of 50,000 or more.
