Happy February to all! The big news this month is that w
e have alumni gatherings planned in three of our hubs over the next several months. See below for more information, and please consider joining us if you are in the DC area, the Bay Area, or Boston - or, if you have an excuse to go to any of them! For added incentive, these dinners will be your opportunity to bid Lissa a fond farewell as Executive Director (not as a Fellow, of course - in that capacity, she will continue to be with us).
Washington, DC, Sunday, March 10th, 7-9 pm: In conjunction with our annual Spring Retreat and Policy Communications training, we will be hosting dinner at Agora, 1527 17th Street, NW. Double added incentive: meet the 2018 Fellows! See our website for more information. The RSVP deadline has passed, but if you are interested in attending, contact Erin.

Boston, MA, Friday, May 10th: Staff and trustees will be in town for our annual board meeting and New England Fellowship interviews, so voila, another opportunity! We are still working out the location for this event (either dinner or heavy hors d'oeuvres) but interested Fellows, please save the date!

Conserving southern California's native flora
Nick Jensen, 2018 Fellow, has been working with the California Native Plant Society as a Conservation Analyst with the assistance of a Switzer Leadership Grant. Nick has completed his first year with CNPS where he is applying his botany expertise to efforts to conserve southern California's unique and critical habitats.

Can genetic engineering save disappearing forests?
Humans have not yet released a genetically engineered plant that is intended to spread and persist in an unmanaged environment. Biotech trees - genetically engineered or gene-edited - offer the possibility of releasing genetically engineered trees into forests to counter threats to forest health and represent a new frontier in biotechnology, writes Fellow Jason Delborne.

Amanda Beal has been confirmed as the new Commissioner of the State of Maine's Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry! Amanda was most recently the President of Maine Farmland Trust.
