Araskog Outspends Silvin in 
Race for Council Seat

Incumbent Julie Araskog so far has outspent opponent Rene Silvin by a nearly two-to-one margin in their contest for the Group 2 Town Council seat. Voters will determine the outcome of the race in the March 12 town election. Through Feb. 14, the latest reporting period, Araskog spent $97,883, compared to Silvin's $51,257, according to their campaign treasurer's reports filed Friday with the town clerk's office.

Palm Beach Leaders Urge

Community leaders urged the Town Council on Thursday to act boldly, and more quickly, to end the high turnover that has plagued the police and fire-rescue departments for most of this decade. Some of them suggested a tax hike to raise the money needed to boost pay and pension benefits so the departments are competitive with local agencies.

Valet Parking Helping Worth Avenue Congestion, Officials Say

Although the town's pilot valet parking program on Worth Avenue seems to be helping ease traffic congestion, it is unclear whether it is opening more spots for shoppers. That was the consensus reached by the Town Council after Worth Avenue Association member Daren Rubenfeld and town Zoning Director Josh Martin gave an update on the program on Thursday.

Palm Beach Town Council Makes Changes to Town Marina Plan

Palm Beach's $32 million plan to build a new, modern town marina has run into some obstacles, officials told the Town Council last week. On Thursday, the council was forced to approve a change in the conceptual design so the outer face of the docks will be farther away from the navigation channel in the Lake Worth Lagoon.

Palm Beach Board Recommends Banning Rental Scooter

A town board is recommending a ban on scooter ride sharing in Palm Beach, citing concern that left-behind scooters will litter sidewalks and public or private property. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 7-0 on Tuesday to recommend the Town Council adopt the prohibition. Town officials became concerned last year about the shared rental scooters, which have become popular in West Palm Beach and other cities throughout the United States.
Midtown and Phipps Ocean Park Beaches Close Temporarily Because of Harmful Bacteria Threat

UPDATE: The beaches reopened on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 4 PM.
MidTown Beach and Phipps Ocean Park were closed by the Town of Palm Beach because the Florida Department of Health found a high level of bacteria present in the water.

An abandoned boat that beached itself just north of The Mar-a-Lago Club is breaking apart in the rough surf, exposing gas and oil tanks that some residents worry will contaminate the beach and ocean.

The Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's Grand Classic ship returned to the Port of Palm Beach on Monday. For reasons that remain unclear, the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's Grand Classica ship was denied entry into Havana on Friday by Cuban officials.

Helipad at Mar-a-Lago got a Workout from Marine One

The controversial new helipad at Mar-a-Lago was used by Marine One to take the President to Miami where he spoke on political unrest in Venezuela. Two identical helicopters lifted off from the back lawn, where the helipad is located. As a security measure, Marine One always flies in a group of as many as five identical helicopters.

Southern Blvd. Bridge Traffic Interruptions Scheduled
Southern Blvd Bridge
The intersection at Southern Boulevard and Flagler Drive will be temporarily without traffic signalization, approximately 4 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily from Saturday, Feb. 23, to Tuesday, Feb. 26, as wall foundations for the replacement bridge are installed near the intersection. Law enforcement will direct traffic through the intersection during this time.

New Beach Shark Fishing Restrictions
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, meeting Wednesday in Gainesville, approved several shore-based shark fishing changes that will go into effect July 1.
FWC Bans Tropical Fish Harvesting at Blue Heron Bridge

Last year, Moody Gardens - a Texas amusement park aquarium, removed hundreds of tropical fish from the world-class tropical fish site at Phil Foster Park. This ban implemented by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission will designate the park as a protected site and go into effect April 1st, 2019.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Fish and Wildlife Research Institute reported Tuesday that about 91,400 loggerhead nests were found, down about 5,000 nests from the previous year.
