Greetings,
Building healthy relationships is essential to excellent social work. As I reflect on this month's Ethical Principle, I am reminded of the social work mentors and colleagues who inspire me. Because of relationships, I have maintained hope in spite of exposure to the most challenging human situations. The Ethical Principle below is expansive; in that it calls social workers to invest in all relationships. So read on, then reflect and join me in calling out those social work relationships you have invested in that strengthen you and shape your love for social work. In next month's issue, instead of writing my column, we will use the space to shine light on those social workers you would like to acknowledge.
Value: Importance of Human Relationships
Ethical Principle: Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships. Social workers understand that relationships between and among people are an important vehicle for change. Social workers engage people as partners in the helping process. Social workers seek to strengthen relationships among people in a purposeful effort to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities.
Have you worked in offices, on teams and in situations that seemed negative and oppressive? I have! My first experience was a wake-up call as I expected social service agencies to be positive spaces filled with people who desire to make a difference. I imagined teamwork, camaraderie, and mutual affirmation as the norm.
As a social work educator, my current students have the same expectation, so it is disheartening when they share negative work environments and discouraging interactions with experienced social workers who seem unsupportive and frankly don't reflect passion for their work or even the profession.
I am advocating for change in this area. The relationships we cultivate create our work environments. We can make them as positive and affirming as we choose. I do not accept that burnout and compassion fatigue are inextricably connected to social work. I have been mentored by social workers who choose to uplift and inspire instead.
So, I encourage you to self-reflect and join us in some professional rebranding, that focuses on optimism and hope as cultural norms in our relationships with each other. We can create work environments that reflect the Ethical Principles we are guided by.

Greetings Everyone!
I hope everyone's semester is off to a great start! For those of you in the field, I hope that you are learning a lot and making the connections from classroom theory.
The leadership team has been busy reviewing current legislative bills for the upcoming session, and we are excited to see what this year will bring. We have also been preparing for the 2019 NASW Florida Conference and how we can make the event meaningful for students.
If anyone has ideas on how to enhance LEAD or the NASW Florida Conference for students, we are always open to suggestions!

In the November newsletter we reported the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) notified the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy (Florida 491 Board) that the ASWB Exam Use Policy prohibits interns from taking the LCSW exam until they have completed their two years of supervision.
The Florida 491 Board filed an exemption request in response to this ASWB policy. At the 491 Board meeting in February, it was reported that ASWB had not granted the exemption to the policy as requested by the Board. ASWB gave no reason, but asked to come and speak to the Board at their next meeting.
The 491 Board is reviewing all their options and NASW-FL has agreed to work with the Board in their review. In the meantime any intern may apply to take the test.

HRSA's Virtual Job Fairs are online recruitment events that connect students, trainees, and clinicians with health care delivery organizations. The goal of this upcoming Virtual Job Fair is to connect current and future clinicians who are providing substance use disorder services with health care organizations located in underserved communities.
