LATIN TEACHER DR. KATHY PILLER PRESENTS AT ACTFL CONFERENCE IN D.C.
|
|
On November 22, Latin Instructor & World Language Department Chair Kathy Piller (pictured above with dissertation advisor Dr. Kathryn McDonnell) represented Laguna at the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C.
In her presentation, entitled "Project-Based Learning in the Latin Classroom," she provided an overview of the basics of project-based learning and a demonstration of how she uses this practice in all of her Latin classes. Examples she incorporated into the presentation included the seventh grade Roman villa project as well as the tenth grade Dinovember project.
"Overall, the presentation seemed to be a success as I received lots of positive feedback," says Kathy. "The attendees really loved the student work!"
Congratulations on this successful outreach, Dr. Piller!

OWLS RETURN FOR ANNUAL ALUMNI SOCCER GAME
|
|
Owl spirit was high on Thanksgiving weekend at the annual alumni soccer game. Varsity Soccer student-athletes were victorious with a 6-3 win over the alumni.
Frankie Baron ’23
scored three of the six student goals, assisted by
Kevin Khodabandehlou ’20

Andreas Jackson ’21
(1). Students can thank their alumni goalie,
Ryan Green ’07,
for his excellent keeper skills. “
Ryan was an amazing goalie for Laguna, and he showed on Friday that he still has what it takes,” said Laguna soccer coach Kevin Shertzer
,
who played alongside fellow faculty member and alumni parent, Paul Chiment, for the students.
Alumni goals were scored by
Jackson Hurley ’18
,
Hector Lujan ’19
, and
Dylan Young ’19
. The Judson brothers,
Andrew ’08
and
Seth ’10
, brought their skills back to the pitch, along with former classmates
Trevor Yothers ’08
and
Chris Bremner ’10
. “It was great to see so many alumni return to Hope Ranch field,” said Athletic Director Jason Donnelly. “Watching guys like Dylan Young and Hector Lujan battle with
John Adams ’70

This week, Kevin Guay joined the Laguna community as substitute teacher for Mr. Nathan's Ninth Grade Civilizations course.
Kevin has been teaching in the classroom and writing centers since he earned his BA in History from Cal State University in 2013. He is currently completing his Ph.D from the University of Texas.
“Teaching history provides students with a better understanding of the world," says Kevin. "In my experience, students who study history discover new and thoughtful ways to explain contemporary social, political, and economic issues. Moreover, depending on how an instructor approaches the subject, learning history can be a thoroughly entertaining experience, brimming with real human drama and epic suspense.”
Welcome to the nest, Kevin!
