Successful Holiday Season at AFAC!
A big thank you to everyone who helped make Arlington families in need a priority this holiday season! 5,345 special meals that included turkeys in November and whole roaster chickens in December were served. Companies, apartment buildings, and other organizations held Holiday Food Drives in November and December and donated over 84,000 lbs of food for our shelves. Volunteers also contributed 8,300 hours over these holiday months! Thanks again to everyone for making an impact for our neighbors in need.
Norm Lamberg
We are sad to announce the passing of our long time volunteer, Norm Lamberg. Norm volunteered with AFAC for about 15 years, helping out with morning food distributions 3x a week and with our two major single day food drives of the year.

If you would like to leave a message and/or share a story, fill out this Google Form and we will share the messages with his family.

Volunteering Needs
Weekly Monday AM Distribution Shift
We are looking for two more individuals who can make a weekly commitment on Mondays from 9:15am-12:15pm to help with our food distribution. You'll be on your feet for the duration of the shift, helping our clients select from the offerings available. Start by signing up on the online calendar - look for the assignment "Distribution Morning Helper". Please try it once or twice before making a commitment.
Healthy Play Check In at Arlington Mill
Greet clients and their children as they attend a special program that takes place during our distribution at the Arlington Mill Community Center on Mondays from 11am-1pm. You would sign children in and as they exit, provide a simple snack and newsletter. You would not be responsible for the care of the children during the program, just the start and finish. Please sign up on the volunteer calendar and more instructions will be provided. Ideally, this would be someone who is willing to do this every week or every other week.
Backpack Buddies Driver
Our backpack buddy program is expanding and we're looking for someone to make a commitment of every Thursday (or every other Thursday) to deliver backpack kits to approximately 5 Arlington Public Schools on Thursday mornings. Your first stop would be at AFAC to pick up the kits and you can make the deliveries in whatever order makes sense for you, but we aim to have them all delivered by noon. Please email [email protected] for more details.
Partner Agency Needs Food Distribution Volunteers
Columbia Hills is an AFAC distribution site (located at 1000 S. Frederick St) and it is managed by APAH. They're looking for 3 volunteers who can make a weekly commitment (or 6 who can do an every other week commitment) every Tuesday from 3-5 pm. To sign up, please contact APAH's Resident Services Coordinator Katherine Garcia at [email protected] or 703-276-7444.
Nutrition Corner
Meet Kimber!
Kimber Raczynski graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise with a concentration in Dietetics. She is currently completing her dietetic internship with the Virginia Tech Northern Virginia Program, with hopes to become a Registered Dietitian. We're excited to have Kimber at AFAC where she will be providing nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations during the month of January as part of her community health rotation.
