Advent Pause: 200 Years of Silent Night #CALMnBRIGHT
A Note From Pastor Linda
"While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. She gave birth to her firstborn child, a son, wrapped him snugly, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." - Luke 2: 6
Greetings Friends~
The church has long counseled keeping Advent as a season of active waiting, rather than constant celebration of Christmas. There have been many worship arguments about whether or not to sing Christmas carols BEFORE Christmas- even putting a tree up before THE DAY. This year at Hosanna we are going to BOLDLY sing Christmas even in the midst of our waiting- practicing seeing where God is entering our lives in ways that align with God's coming in the vulnerability of the manger.
This year is the 200th anniversary of the debut of "Silent Night, Holy Night." This hymn has become the best-loved worship moment of many Christians-even those who only come to church once a year. Something mystical occurs as we light our candles and sing the hope of "all is calm, all is bright"-peace and light for the world.
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.
And yet, no baby is born on a silent night, especially not in a stable. Anyone who has experienced the miracle of childbirth knows that there can be a lot of noise and commotion in welcoming a newborn into the world. Yes, it is beautiful, even sacred... but it is not quiet. Add to that the audience of animals offering their commentary and it may well have been a rather unruly and raucous scene.
Join us on Wednesdays and Sundays for worship as we explore the story. On Wednesdays we will be building a Family Nativity set- 1 piece each week. Make sure to pick up an Advent devotion to use at home.
This week is all about PEACE... so Peace Out!
