[Source:  Your Therapy Source]

The study included 20 children (8-14 years old) with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy. Hand use was investigated with videotaping of bimanual daily activities. Each child identified bimanual activities of their interest and no interest. Videos were then coded based on the affected extremity's forms and effectiveness of use, caregiver provision and types of assistance, and child's satisfaction.

Movement Impairments in Autism Could be Reversible
[Source:  Science Daily]

Researchers from Cardiff University have established a link between a genetic mutation and developmental movement impairments in autism.

The study, which found that the mutation of the CYFIP1 gene leads to changes in the development of brain cells, leading to the motor issues, also suggests that motor learning difficulties occur at a young age and can be reversed through behavioral training.

Children Who Eat Lunch Score 18 Percent Higher in Reading Tests
[Source: Science Daily]

The powerful connection between nutrition and education has been revealed by new research from ESMT Berlin. Primary school children who attended a public free lunch program over an extended period were shown to have significantly better learning outcomes.

Professors Rajshri Jayaraman from ESMT Berlin and Tanika Chakraborty from the Indian Institute of Technology studied the effects of India's midday meal scheme, the world's largest free school lunch program, feeding over 120 million children every day.

Excess Screen Time Linked to Myopia Epidemic in Kids
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Ask anyone about the benefits of technology and it probably won't take them long to rhyme off a list of examples: it helps broaden your knowledge, connect with friends, both new and old, and allows you to see things you've never seen before.

But what about the drawbacks? Here's a major one: increased screen time is hard on your eyes.
In fact, more and more young people are wearing glasses to correct their nearsightedness. This trend has prompted optical health experts to determine if the use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets and smart phones is leading to a deterioration in sight that is reaching epidemic proportions.

States Skirting Obligation To Cover ABA Therapy
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Despite a federal mandate nearly five years ago, several state Medicaid programs are still failing to cover treatment like applied behavior analysis for children with autism, advocates say.
In 2014, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services issued a bulletin telling states to pay for "medically necessary diagnostic and treatment services" for kids with autism, but stopped short of directly requiring ABA therapy.

by Anne Zachry OTR/L

Do you have a student or child working on prewriting strokes? I recently started seeing a student for therapy who was already using these stencils, and they are so clever, I had to share them with you!

Basically, all you need are several file folders (colored file folders are nice), a black marker, a laminating machine, and sticky back Velcro.

It isn't every day that you get to see a DOG playing BASKETBALL! Wow, I sure was impressed when I came across this 1 minute video on YouTube so I felt th e need to share it with with my 3rd grade students. I believe that incorporating audio-visual media into the speech therapy session really helps children who have language difficulties. If I were to

PT Corner: Torticollis: Addressing the Full Body to Treat the Neck
By: Dr. Joni Redlich, DPT, PCS

The child in utero is curled up tight to fit in such a tight space.  If a baby's neck is tilted, it is visually obvious to the parent and pediatrician.  If they have asymmetry elsewhere the observations may be more subtle.  It may be harder to put one arm in the onesie, the child may prefer to play with toys on one side, or the child may crawl with one leg dragging behind.

I noticed Sarah's arms as soon as I met her. It is hard not to, as 15 years of self-injury have rendered them more scar than skin. Sarah isn't my student, but I've taught plenty of kids like her, and she offered to talk to me about why she has cut herself for a decade and a half, and how the adults in her life could have helped her manage the pain that prompted her to self-injure.

"Say sorry to your brother."
"But he's the one who-"
"Say it!" you insist, an edge of warning in your voice.
He huffs, rolls his eyes to the side and says flatly, "Sorry."
"Say it like you mean it," you demand.

Career Corner: Is Your Best Face Forward on Facebook?
[Source:  Career Builder]

Before posting pictures of your late-night revelry or complaints about your job on social media, think again - 70 percent of employers use social media to screen candidates before hiring, up significantly from 60 percent last year and 11 percent in 2006.

The national survey was conducted online on behalf of CareerBuilder by Harris Poll  between February 16 and March 9, 2017. It included a representative sample of more than 2,300 hiring managers and human resource professionals across industries and company sizes in the private sector.
