Fall 2018
A Loss in our Shaker Community
We are sad to share that Woodbury sixth grade teacher, Aisha Fraser,  SHHS Class of 1991, tragically lost her life on November 17. She touched so many and will be deeply missed. A memorial fund will be established with the Shaker Schools Foundation to honor Aisha's passion for the Shaker Schools and students. Details on the memorial arrangements can be found  online.

Lomond LEGO Robotics Takes Off!
The FIRST LEGO League Jr. Robotics Club has launched at Lomond Elementary! The after-school club, supported by the Shaker Schools Foundation and Rockwell Automation, features hands-on STEAM learning using LEGO WeDo Robotics kits. Four teams of six students each will work together on a challenge called Mission: Moon. Teams began by learning about the Moon and exploring what kinds of problems they would need to solve in order to live there like air, water, energy, and exercise. Now, students will design a solution to one or more of these problems using robotics and LEGO elements. The students will show what they learned at an Expo in Shaker in December.

" FIRST LEGO League at Lomond is really taking off!" says Lomond principal Carina Robinson. "The students have been working on collaborative problem solving teams and are learning about and applying the engineering design cycle. It has been great watching them be creative inquirers and I can't wait for our first Expo!"

Lomond parent Rachel Patel, an engineer at Rockwell Automation, helped bring the program to Lomond. The Foundation is actively seeking additional community volunteers who are affiliated with Rockwell who can assist in expanding the program to other elementary schools. Honoring SHHS Class of 50/51
This year's A Night for the Red & White will pay special tribute to the members of the Shaker Heights High School class of 1950/51. Alumni from these classes have worked tirelessly to raise funds over the past decade with the goal of providing additional academic support for our students. To date, they have raised more than $290,000 to support initiatives such as the Summer Academy to help academically at-risk students transition successfully to the High School, and a new social and emotional curriculum for elementary students. The Foundation will honor these class members for their dedication with a special presentation at this year's event. We invite you to join us in celebrating their tremendous dedication to the Shaker Schools!
Boosting Learning for Shaker Pre-K Families
Shaker Pre-K families attended the first of seven Family Inquiry Nights designed to support emerging literacy, math, science, and social and emotional skills for our District's youngest learners. At each event, families with students in Shaker Pre-K programs are invited to enjoy dinner, special activities, a parent discussion, and a book to take home. The first event took place at Onaway, where families received a pictu re book of The Billy Goats Gruff. The remaining events will rotate between Mercer and Onaway and each will feature a different aspect of the curriculum.

The Shaker Schools Foundation secured a $30,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation to make this outreach possible to our families. We are grateful for their support!
Foundation Sponsors Visiting Authors of All American Boys
Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, authors of the New York Times bestselling young adult book "All American Boys," visited an assembly of Middle School students and held small group discussions with High School students in October. The Foundation sponsored their visit, in conjunction with the Shaker Heights Public Library and the Middle School and High School PTOs. The authors also attended an evening community discussion at the High School Large Auditorium.

"All American Boys" is the winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children's Literature and the 2016 Coretta Scott King Honor. The book follows two teens-one black, one white-as they deal with the repercussions of a violent act of police brutality.
