FAR Program Helps Fitness Mix
Jumping in Armenia
For 15 years, Liana Pakhdigian dreamed about opening her own fitness center. Six months ago, her dream came true when she launched FitnessMix-Jumping. Now, she trains everyone from toddlers to seniors at her own facility. "I have created everything-the studios for dance classes and yoga, the strength-training classes-everything. It took time and money, but now I have my dream workplace," she said. Liana was able to improve her newly-launched business with the help of a grant from FAR's Small Business Assistance Program (SBA). She is among six other Syrian-Armenian entrepreneurs who were most recently chosen by FAR to receive support to kickstart and/or develop their own businesses in Armenia through SBA.

Saint Gregory the Theologian
 On Satuday, February 2nd the Armenian Church celebrates the feast of St. Gregory the Theologian. This great ecumenical doctor of the Church is also known as Gregory Nazianzen, after the town of his birth.
The saint was born through the prayers of his mother, who relentlessly prayed for a son. Being inquisitive by nature, Gregory first studied at Caesarea, then in Palestine, Alexandria and finally in Athens, becoming philosopher and rhetorician.
In Athens he studied with St. Basil the Great. The two friends had natural tendency to asceticism, delighting the locals with their monastic feats.
At the age of thirty Gregory returned to his homeland, was baptized and made a vow of celibacy. Studying the Scripture day and night, he received the gift of clear contemplation of Christ.
Consecrated in 361 by his father in priesthood, he became head of Nazianzen Church, and twenty years later - the bishop of Constantinople. For twelve years the saint taught the people in Orthodox faith and fought against heretics. He participated in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381). Literary heritage of St. Gregory includes numerous sermons and letters.

27th Anniversary of the Armenian Armed Forces
January 28 is celebrated in Armenia as Army Day, and this year marks the 27th anniversary of the Armenian Armed Forces.
In September 1990, the Supreme Council of Armenia adopted a decision on forming a Special Regiment within the Internal Affairs Ministry of the time; and with the government's decision, the Committee of Defense was formed on May 4, 1991.
On January 28, 1992, the Government of Armenia adopted the decision On the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, and this became the beginning for the formation of the Armenian Armed Forces.
The first phase for the formation of the Armenian army, however, is considered to be from 1988 to 1992, when there was a challenge of ensuring the safety of the people of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh); at the time, volunteer detachments were carrying out this task.
On Sunday, January 27, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 27th anniversary of the Armenian Armed Forces, there will be a special Hokehankist prayer service offered for the souls of all of our freedom-fighters and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for freedom and liberation of our Homeland. The service will take place
immediately
after Badarak at St. Mary Armenian Church.

FAR Benefits Artsakh Doctors
Dr. Zhanna Chalyan of Artsakh's Martakert Medical Center is a physician who actively improves her skills every day, and loves sharing newfound knowledge with her colleagues. Last fall, she spent a month in Yerevan training at the Shengavit Medical Center through FAR's Continuing Medical Education Program (CME).
"I was affiliated with the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, but I took the opportunity to practice in every department I was interested in," said the 42-year-old physician. "I learned how to give spinal anesthesia for a C-section, as well as how to give an epidural. Now I'm consulting with my colleagues in Martakert to apply what I learned."
Dr. Zhanna underwent the training thanks to the Armenian American Health Professionals Organization (AAHPO), which supports CME fellows-especially those from Artsakh.
"FAR organizes CME very well. Besides the hospital training, I took computer classes, and the staff at the National Medical Library taught me how to use electronic resources," said Dr. Chalyan. "I learned about some diseases that are rare but occur in Artsakh; I also learned about drug usage. All in all, it was a very productive month, and I'm grateful to FAR for the opportunity."

13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-the Son of Man.[a] 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[b] 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him."[c]
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
