ASSISTED OUTPATIENT TREATMENT WEBINAR ON MARCH 29, 2019
During the January County Administrators Advisory Committee Meeting, OMHSAS shared that they will be hosting a webinar on March 29th from 1-3 p.m. For anyone who would like to attend in person, it will be hosted at the Clothes Tree Building on the property of the former Harrisburg State Hospital. Registration details have not been provided to date.
ASSERTIVE COMMUNITY TREATMENT (ACT) WEBINAR HOSTED BY OMHSAS
Lorna Moser, Ph.D., and co-developer of the Tool for Measurement of ACT (TMACT), will provide an overview of ACT research, which includes the cost-effectiveness of this model. She will also provide an overview of the relevance of program fidelity, the components of high-fidelity ACT practice, and common strategies and challenges to high-fidelity ACT implementation. CCAP ANNOUNCES PRIORITIES
Includes forensic services for seriously mentally ill county inmates
Untreated mental health needs are often the catalyst behind entry, and then re-entry, into the criminal justice system. Counties have been leading the call for alternatives to placing offenders with mental illness or developmental disabilities in our jails. Not every county is currently served with expanded community capacity, so it will also be critical to work closely with state policy makers to address the need for funding for expanded services, beds and diversion across the mental health system as a whole, whether or not an individual is involved with the criminal justice system. COMPANION VERSIONS OF DISABILITY INTEGRATION ACT REINTRODUCED
Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI-05) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reintroduced companion versions of the Disability Integration Act. The summary says, "
This bill prohibits states or local governments that provide institutional placements for individuals with disabilities who need long-term assistance with daily living activities or health-related tasks, and prohibits insurance providers that fund such long-term services, from denying community-based services that would enable such individuals to live in the community and lead an independent life".
PENNSYLVANIA AWARDED STATE CONSORTIUM ON FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
Pennsylvania is one of seven state invited to join the first State Consortium on Family Engagement. The framework is intended to enjoin families with educators to create and implement effective practices that support learning and development. Areas identified include college, career, and community readiness. More information will be available as the consortium continues its work.
READY TO START TASK FORCE INITIAL FINDINGS PRESENTED
Governor Wolf established a Ready to State Task Force in September to develop strategies to address health, human services and education policy for infants and toddlers age zero to three. The key themes and initial findings were developed following six regional listening sessions with stakeholders representing health care, human services, education, research, businesses and employers, foundations, and research organizations.
NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR RON COWELL AWARD
The State Interagency Coordinating Council for Early Intervention is looking for nominations for the 2018 Ron Cowell Award for Excellence in Service to Young Children with Disabilities and Their Families. Nominations will be accepted until February 22, 2019. More information is available online.
CCAP CRIMINAL JUSTICE AWARDS OPEN FOR NOMINEES
Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 County Criminal Justice Awards Program of the CCAP 21st Century Committee. The focus of the award is to recognize centers that have implemented best practices such as successful re-entry initiatives, prevention programs, development of effective linkages with community programming in behavioral health programs, and other successful re-entry initiatives. County jails and detention centers or alternative programs that have entered a project previously can resubmit their entries, even if they were awarded in prior years.
For 2019, the 21st Century Committee is very pleased to announce an all-electronic entry process. MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE OPPPORTUNITY
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 3, which includes Pennsylvania, has a Mental Health Technical Assistance Center contract to provide training and technical assistance. Technical assistance is directed toward strengthening the skills and knowledge of the behavioral health and primary care workforce for prevention, treatment and recovery support services to all ages and individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders.
The MHTTC in conjunction with subject matter experts use proven knowledge technology transfer strategies and practices for evidence-based practices. Methods will include: a) skill-based training, b) targeted and intensive technical assistance, c) learning collaboratives and d) online courses, toolkits, virtual meetings and technology-driven models to engage the behavioral health, primary care workforce, consumers/peers, family members, advocates, and other stakeholders to improve system and individual outcomes. All training and technical assistance is individualized, data driven and provided at no cost.
