ARTSOC'S PUBLIC ART INVENTORY PROGRESS REPORT
Arts Orange County has been compiling an inventory of the art in public places located throughout the county. As of now, public art in 23 of Orange County's 34 cities has been cataloged, and the numbers are impressive: nearly 600 works of public art are on display. The graph above shows the statistics for the 10 cities with the most public art. This inventory is far from complete--even in cities that have been cataloged, there have been new works installed, works that have been removed, and there remain works that we simply don't yet know about--particularly works on private properties. ArtsOC shares this data with City arts coordinators in order to obtain information about additions and missing items in the inventory. Also, we have been gradually uploading our inventory data to SparkOC.com, where 100 of the works are now listed with images, descriptions and map locations, a resource for art lovers who wish to visit these sites. The inventory is also a valuable tool in cultural planning work that ArtsOC performs for cities (it is now completing an Arts & Culture Master Plan for the City of Costa Mesa) and for arts advocates seeking to encourage more public art in their communities. Seed funding for ArtsOC's public art inventory project was first provided in 2014 by The Architecture Foundation of Orange County.

ARTSOC ENCOURAGES YOU TO APPLY TO BECOME A GRANTS REVIEWER
Peer-review panels are at the core of the California Arts Council's (CAC) grantmaking process.
"There have been very few panel members from Orange County," commented ArtsOC's Rick Stein. "This is because not enough of Orange County's arts leaders, arts educators, and arts scholars are entering their names for consideration. I strongly urge you to do so in order to ensure that Orange County is fairly represented on these panels."
Deadlines to apply are November 15, 2018, and January 15, 2019. Panelists are now compensated with a stipend as well as travel costs to attend the panel meetings in Sacramento. Complete details may be found here.

"It was a great experience bonding with the other vets and they all have remarkable stories. Please get involved. Tell your story. I feel like a large weight has been lifted off of me by participating in this."
That's from a participant in our most recent VOICES: Veterans Storytelling Project. It's a free program that helps veterans tell their service stories-no matter their feelings, how they were discharged, or how they served-to civilians in a public forum. Dave Barton guides participants through the process. We invite anyone that served to participate, and welcome people of color, women, and LGBTQ vets. Contact Dave at 714-598-7406 to find out more or visit our VOICES Facebook page and DM Dave there.
