Engaging Generation Z in Your Classroom
"Generation Z" has arrived on the Harper campus! According to
The Beloit College Mindset List, "they are the first generation for whom a 'phone' has been primarily a video game, direction finder, electronic telegraph, and research library."
Students born after 1995 are a part of this exciting group, which brings unique strengths and challenges to the classroom. Let's fully engage this new generation.

We're Moving this Week!
We're moving back to Building F in March, along with the Library and Academic Support Centers. The Academy will be located on the third floor in room F320. However, Building F does not officially open until April 2, so there will be a few weeks where access is limited. If you need access to the Academy before that date, please call 847.925.6174 and an Academy representative will assist you.

$600K In Donor Sponsored Harper Scholarships Are Open
A new cycle of Donor Sponsored Scholarships is now open for Harper students. These scholarships are available through Harper's Educational Foundation. There are 170 different scholarships, and more than $600K goes to Harper students for tuition, books, and fees. Scholarships are for financial need (about 50 of the scholarships), program of study, or merit based.

Scholarship Day: Thursday, March 8, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Educational Foundation and Mobile Unit will be at Avante (on the side closest to Building Y) to promote scholarship opportunities to students. Stop by to learn what scholarships are available for your students.

The Blackboard ePortfolio tool is now available for students and faculty at Harper. ePortfolios empower students with tools to effectively present knowledge and artifacts in a cohesive, personalized format.

This year, Harper College is celebrating its 50 years as a college, and on Monday, March 12, we will acknowledge Harper's 50 years of diversity and inclusion work with a day of events and a video with reflections from people from Harper's past. We hope the day will be one of reflection and celebration: reflection of where we have been, celebration of how far we have come, and acknowledgement of where we will go next.

The Curriculum & Instruction Goal Team is soliciting faculty that are interested in developing innovative instructional techniques and methods to increase the level of student persistence and completion in courses that students typically take in their first 15 credits at Harper College.

Open Pedagogy - Disposable Assignments vs. Renewable Assignments

At the Achieving the Dream 14th Annual DREAM Conference last week, David Wiley, Chief Academic Officer of Lumen Learning, spoke about the difference between disposable assignments and renewable assignments. This is an extension of Open Educational Resources (OER) he describes as open pedagogy.
The concept is relatively simple. Most assignments students complete are disposable. The assignments have no lasting value beyond the experience itself, and may be thrown away at the end of the course. By contrast, renewable assignments are open to students in future course sections, and to anyone with similar interests worldwide. Renewable assignments enhance learning opportunities for future students.

Faculty Retreat: Meet One of Our Presenters, Dr. Monica Edwards
Dr. Monica Edwards teaches Sociology, but she is also a student of the social dynamics of her own classroom and recently became acutely concerned with the way that classroom discourse is oriented toward the extroverted. Dr. Edwards is also investigating the ways in which the classroom culture is oriented toward distraction, which may also be advantageous for some students and a substantial detriment to others who benefit from "quiet" teaching pedagogies.

Faculty Retreat: Meet One of Our Presenters, Dan Loprieno
Coach Loprieno has worn several different hats at Harper College. He has been a full-time faculty member in Harper's Mathematics Department since the fall of 1991 and has also served as a wrestling coach at Harper since 1989. Many people might not know that Coach Loprieno was that also a student at Harper in the mid 80's. He earned his Associate of Science Degree in 1985. There are very few faculty members left that were here teaching when he started, and none left from when he was a student. Although he feels students themselves haven't changed much over the years, the problems they face and issues they must deal with have escalated to new levels.
