Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ, Jim casual 8-2014

Valentine's Day is a great time to remember Paul's definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13 - a passage read at many weddings. According to Paul:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. - 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Of course, when Paul says that love "keeps no record of wrongs," he is talking about forgiveness. We need love that forgives because u nforgiveness and holding on to a grudge damages people and keeps them from living the life Jesus has freed them to live. Yet, so many people are holding on to hurtful things of the past, and they have paid a terrible price for it. It has been said that, "' Unforgiveness' is the poison that you wish to give to the offender (one who has hurt you), but you are the one that takes it...." We need love that forgives so we can be free from the destruction caused by holding on to grudges and bitterness.

Our God extends to us a love that forgives and keeps no record of wrongs. The prophet Micah teaches us: "You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea." (Micah 7:19). The good news of the gospel is that God in the person of Jesus Christ took the consequences of our sin upon Himself on the cross. As Paul said, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21) Through Christ, God paid the price for our rebellion and self-centeredness so that we can stand before him forgiven and our sins cast as far as the east is from the west! (Psalm 103:12)

According to the Scriptures, the appropriate response to God's forgiveness is to forgive others. Again, to quote the Apostle Paul, "Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." (Colossians 3:13)

Please note that this is not a nice suggestion. Rather, it is a command! One of the hallmarks of Christian maturity is our capacity to forgive. We forgive not because a person has offered an apology or has made restitution for what they have done. We forgive because the Lord has forgiven us. The better we know God, the better our capacity to forgive. Conversely, the less we know God, the less our capacity to forgive.

On Valentine's Day, remember the ones you love, but also remember the One who loves you more than you can imagine. He created you, redeemed you and set you free to love and forgive others. His love heals and restores.

In Christ's love,
Pastor Jim

Winter/Spring Sermon Series - John:
What gospel is unlike the 3 others, has Jesus telling us "I am,"is filled with symbolism, possesses the most metaphors for Jesus, loves to talk about love and is written for people like us who have not seen Jesus?  The answer, of course, is the Gospel of John.  For many John's gospel is the first book of the Bible they have read and contains the first passage of Scripture that they have memorized - John 3:16. During our Sunday morning sermons, we will be studying together this remarkable book as we enter the new year and journey through Lent and Easter.  This study will deepen our understanding of God's love for us and our call to love others thereby equipping us to be more faithful followers of Christ.  This will be a wonderful series to invite a friend to attend!
