WORD for the Week for January 27, 2019
Third Sunday After the Epiphany

COME & WORSHIP
Sabbath Beginnings - Sacred Journey - Traditional Worship
WORD for Sabbath Beginnings 8am
Scripture Text: Amos 5:6-24 (NRSV)

Worship Leader: Rev. Dwight Haberman

Holy Communion :  After our service, last Sunday morning (1-20) we were discussing the differences between the Old and New Testaments. In the New Testament we hear from Jesus different tones for images of God. Here in Amos is a bridge into a God who reaches out to us with a loving call of how we are to live. This passage is worth our deepest attention.

WORD for Sacred Journey 8:30am
Scripture Text: Amos 5:21-24 (NRSV)

The Story: David Focht

Reflection:   This week in Sacred Journey, David Focht shares The Story and guides our look at the criminal justice system. Underneath the contentious questions of whose lives matter is the declaration that  all life matters to God . Although we might like to think that justice is color-blind, unfortunately, reality tells us otherwise. Our response to injustice as the people of God demonstrates that our witness doesn’t begin and end with slogans or rallies. Guided by the scriptures, we can allow stories to emerge in our worshiping communities and learn to hold the pain of injustice for those who are marginalized. With the knowledge, and a commitment to create the community that God envisioned, we can also work to change the systems that perpetuate injustice. The work is not easy, but the reward is the transformation from warriors to guardians. Come and share the journey—all are welcome!

WORD for Traditional Worship 10am
Scripture Text: Amos 5:6-27 (NRSV)

Preaching:  Rev. Judy Zabel

Building Bridges: Dismantling Racism

Guardians or Warriors?

Reflection: Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter. Both matter. The question is, how does the prophet Amos' call for justice inform the very real and vital work of working out justice in our neighborhood? What is our role as Christians to address the racial disparities and also support our police, who put their lives on the line every day? Tough questions and no easy answers, but lots to ponder, and that is exactly what living our faith in the world is all about. Bring a friend to worship with you. Brunch will be nice and hot as always and all are welcome.

For the Children and the Adults in Their Lives: There is a phrase we sometimes use in the life of the church: "the body of Christ." Do you know this phrase? Usually, it's used to talk about all of the people who love Jesus and want to make the world a better place by sharing the love of God. "The body" is the people and "Christ" is a special word that means Jesus saves the world. Jesus Christ saves the world and we as "the body" work together to help Jesus make that happen. Maybe you're part of a team or family or class that has to work together to make great things happen, like winning a game, making dinner, or doing a project. It takes many people - many parts of the body - to work together and Jesus trusts we can do it. How about you? What is your role in helping make the world a better place? What do you think your role will be when you're a little older?
