New hands-on workshops, new Academy space, new technology!

We Moved to Building F
The Academy has moved back to Building F and we are now unpacking and getting settled. We are located on the third floor in room F320. However, Building F does not officially open until April 2, so there will be a few weeks where access is limited. If you need access to the Academy before that date, please call 847.925.6174 and an Academy staff member will assist you.
The Library and Academic Support Centers are also in the process of moving back to Building F in phases this month. They will be completely moved in and ready to serve students by April 2.

Writing Strategies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
Learn different teaching strategies designed to assist deaf and hard of hearing students in their writing assignments in a variety of classrooms. While the seminar will be grounded in a history of ASL and deaf culture in the United States, it will also draw on methodologies from writing across the curriculum principles in order to address the needs and challenges of those students for whom ASL is their primary language. The writing strategies introduced in this seminar will also be applicable more broadly to students coming from a number of writing backgrounds. The facilitators have all trained through DeafTEC at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT.

The Curriculum & Instruction Goal Team is soliciting faculty that are interested in developing innovative instructional techniques and methods to increase the level of student persistence and completion in courses that students typically take in their first 15 credits at Harper College.

The Academy is now accepting proposals for Fall 2018 Faculty/Staff Orientation Week that will take place August 13 to 18. Proposals must be submitted by Friday, April 20.

Empathy & Rigor: Culture of Care in the Classroom

Meetings and teaching. Grading and prepping. Work and personal life. Balancing multiple responsibilities is familiar to most Harper faculty.
During Orientation Week in January, almost 50 faculty and staff gathered to hear their colleagues talk about another challenging balance: academic rigor and empathy in the classroom. It's no wonder that at Odessa College, where the 4 Connections
originated, this balance is called the Practice Paradox. The Practice Paradox states there are many paradoxical, tricky contradictions to navigate as we try to maintain high standards while we also show compassion, concern, and in some cases, flexibility when presented with students' needs.
Brad Grossman (Law Enforcement and Justice Administration), Terri Kong (Biology), Kyle Knee (Math), Dominique Svarc (Accounting), Mary Gawienowski (ESL/Linguistics), and Stephanie Horton (English) participated in the panel discussion led by the Student Experience Goal Team's Culture of Care workgroup.
Feedback from attendees at the session also had a common theme: we need more discussion of these issues, and especially more time for dialogue. We invite you to join us on Tuesday, May 1 at 2 p.m. to continue the conversation and learn about some specific initiatives happening on campus to promote caring in the context of the classroom.

JUST Practice: Social Justice in Everyday Practice

Calling all faculty! You are invited to an inter-disciplinary conference that involves dynamic sessions by recognized leaders in the field of social justice issues addressed through everyday practice in education, advocacy, social sciences, health care and community settings. As educators, advocates for students, and leaders, we respond to the inequities and ethical issues that impact our students and communities. JUST Practice aims to address obstacles that effect access to empowerment, recovery and well-being, and prepares us to provide culturally responsive, quality services for our changing communities. This conference is valuable for educators, practitioners, and students in human services, social sciences, criminal justice, education, health care, and related fields.

What can CCSSE tell us about student learning?
You've HEARD about it...
...you're EXCITED about it...
...one of your classes may have even been selected to PARTICIPATE this spring...
...but do you know how CCSSE relates to STUDENT LEARNING?
CCSSE is the
Community College Survey of Student Engagement, and it's designed to provide information about-you guessed it-student engagement. But CCSSE also helps us by asking students their perceptions of learning.
One of the most prominent ways CCSSE reveals student perceptions of learning at Harper relates to our General Education Outcomes. Several components of CCSSE align with these outcomes. Learn more.
How do we use this information?
Indirect assessment results such as student responses to CCSSE help the Learning Assessment Committee and its work groups see a more holistic picture of student learning than direct assessments alone can provide. The work groups review CCSSE results to help inform the College's general education improvement plans.
This spring, Outcomes Assessment will unveil a dashboard integrating our direct and indirect general education assessment information, including CCSSE results. The dashboard will also provide a more convenient way to access our general education improvement plans. Stay tuned!
