NCUA Supervisory Priorities for 2019

NCUA has released their January 2019 letter to advise credit unions of their supervisory priorities for the new year.  Nor surprisingly, "the security, confidentiality and integrity of the credit union member information remains a key supervisory priority for the NCUA."

This is another reminder that an IT security program is a must for your credit union!

Recently, Btech had the opportunity to work directly with NCUA auditors during our clients' audits.  These audits, as well as past experiences with the NCUA, have helped Btech identify some of the specific services and cybersecurity protocols credit unions should be implementing within their environments. Btech has created a whitepaper entitled  IT Security Goals for Credit Unions  which outlines some of the latest security best practices as communicated to us by the NCUA.

Below are just a few of the essential services the NCUA would like to see in a secure credit union environment.

Vendor Due-Diligence

The NCUA (and all regulatory agencies) has put an enhanced focus on vendor due-diligence. Your vendors are key business partners, and their services often directly affect your ability to service your members.

Patch Management

Personal Computers (PCs) and servers are at great risk to attacks if their operating system and software applications are not kept up to date with the latest patches and service packs.
Because these devices are at the greatest risk of attacks (malware, ransomware, etc), increased focus and diligence has been put on a patch management and deployment service.

Firewall Ruleset Audit

We all understand the importance of a firewall for perimeter security. Additional layers of monitoring, configurations, and reporting from the firewall is now being required by the regulatory agencies. Are you sure that your firewall is properly configured.

These are just three of the cybersecurity services the NCUA wants to see in your credit union environment. Continue reading  here to view a complete list of the top credit union IT challenges and how to address them.

How Secure Are Your Vendors?

Have you ever thought to yourself, "how secure are my vendors?"

You rely on many vendors to provide a long list of services to your credit union and your members. These vendors are critical to your operations. But, are they secure?

Btech is proud of the fact that we are SSAE-16 certified. (SOC2 Type II). We also make it easy to work with us by providing a complete vendor due-diligence package to all of our service agreement clients.

Testimonial

"Since 2007, Santa Ana Federal Credit Union has trusted Btech for our network environment upgrades and their reliable managed security services. Btech has proven itself a rapid responder to our needs time and again; considering we have no in-house IT for day to day activities, it is clear how important their response times are to our operations. In order to keep up with changes in technology, we have implemented Btech's Mobile Device Management service in order to protect our members' personal information, as well as meet regulatory guidelines. We would recommend Btech to any credit union looking for assistance with their network security and operational needs".
