AIA Rochester in the News

AIA Rochester officially kicked off our 100th year anniversary of professional architects in Rochester with a press conference at the renovated airport on January 23, 2019. AIA Rochester 2019 President Jason Streb, AIA, presented our three main public initiatives: the Installation Competition, the Fashion Week show, and our Centennial-themed Design Awards Gala.   He was joined by Cheryl Dinolfo of Monroe County and Holly   Barrett of the City of Rochester, who proclaimed January 23 to be American Institute of Architects Day and The 100th Anniversary of AIA Rochester in the County and City, respectively.   Dinolfo and   Barrett publicly lauded the architects of our city for the positive contribution we have made in shaping our landscape and our community. Streb was also joined by City Councilmember Elaine Spaull and   Meghan McNamara Mundy, who spoke excitedly of our upcoming Fashion Week collaboration.

The press conference was featured on Channel 8 news that evening and in a montage on Cheryl Dinolfo's social media, where she wrote,   "As a high-profile example of the power of architecture and design, the newly transformed @Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC)   is a fitting place to begin the Centennial Celebration of   AIA Rochester. The Airport is a testament to the outstanding work of these talented professionals and the economic impact that investments in public works projects can generate. Similar to other projects, ranging from the   Seneca Park Zoo   expansion to transportation infrastructure upgrades, it ' s evident that working closely with the architecture community will continue to create   #MoreJobs   while enhancing the vibrancy of our community. Thank you to AIA Rochester for sharing our vision for a stronger Monroe County."   You can view the montage on her youtube HERE
AIA Centennial Installation Update
Deadline is Friday, February 15, 2019
Don't miss out on this opportunity!

AIA Rochester, in partnership with the City of Rochester and Monroe County, is hosting a very prominent temporary design competition to explore the concept of shelter in downtown Rochester. Designers are invited to create and construct interactive installations that will be open to the public throughout the summer in Midtown Commons.
The goal of this competition is to create a series of interactive follies that encourage public engagement and in doing so, highlight the importance of architecture. Participating teams are to build upon a plinth provided by AIA Rochester, in which the design should be evocative of the most easily relatable form of architecture in Western Culture - the gabled house.

AIA Rochester Design Awards

AIA Rochester is pleased to announce our 2019 Design Awards.  The Design Awards are an ongoing annual program established to encourage excellence in architectural design, to make the public more aware of our built environment, and to honor the owners, designers, and construction teams of successful projects.  This year, AIA Rochester is excited to extend our Awards program to encompass the synergistic work done by our colleagues at the IIDANY Chapter Rochester City Center.  Our 2019 Awards will be presented at a special Centennial-themed Design Awards Gala as part of our yearlong celebration to mark our 100 year anniversary as a professional organization of architects in Rochester.
Registration is due February 28 and submissions are due April 1.
In collaboration with The Emerging Rochester Architects and colleagues at the IIDANY Chapter Rochester City Center, AIA Rochester is pleased to announce the 2019 Rochester Designers Unleashed: Architectural Ideas Competition. This competition is intended to showcase the talents of young designers in our community, test the limits of what is achievable in our built environment, and inspire new solutions to the design and development issues we currently face.
The Designers Unleashed competition follows the same timeline as the Design Awards: register by February 28 and submit your finalized submission by April 1.

Separated Mixed Occupancies vs. Fire Areas
Over the years, I have found misunderstandings of separated mixed occupancies and fire areas, mainly because both utilize fire barriers for separations. So, here is some clarifying information that is hopefully helpful.
