Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, September 21, 2018

I hope this finds you closing out the week and this last official day of summer 2018 on the upswing. Our Pioneers are headed to Timber Creek High School this evening for an exciting football game. We wish our varsity squad good luck . . . GO PIONEERS!

Today we issued Progress Reports for the 1st quarter of 2018-2019. If you have a student attending Oak Ridge, please review their results as soon as possible keeping in mind the terrific tutoring program we offer for any student needing extra help.

Thank you again to everyone that turned out for this year's Open House Showcase on September 13th. It was a wonderful event and we were all so proud to open the campus up to our school community. The partnership between parents and teachers is critical to student success. We appreciate our families! #thisisoakridge

Ms. Householder, Ms. Watson, and Ms. Santiago-Lugo (not pictured), greeted our families and handed out important PSAT and tutoring information during Open House.

Several of our AP instructors giving information to interested families.

Enjoy your weekend and thank you for looking over this latest community brief.

With Pioneer Pride,

Mrs. Jennifer Bellinger
Principal

Rigor in the Classroomrigorclassroom

Mr. Faber's students have been diligently working on SAT skills to fulfill both their graduation and to help with college readiness requirements.

Mr. Farber's Success Wall
The Success Wall lists the names of students who successfully passed the SAT on the first attempt. Each of these students is now a step closer to meeting their graduation requirements!

All students are working hard to shore up any weaknesses (as diagnosed by SAT practice tests) to help boost their future SAT scores. This is to help them reach not just a graduation score on the SAT, but also a score high enough to assist students with their college scholarship goals. Students pictured above: Angel Alcantara, Ransel Richiez, Helen Oramas Montonya, Hanzel Velasquez, Selena Diaz, and Kevin Edwards.

No Excuses Mentoring ProgramNEMP

This week we held our first No Excuses Mentoring Program meeting for the 2018-2019 school year, led by Mr. Orlando Norwood, assistant principal and sponsor. We currently have 72 members in our program! This year will be hard work, but it's worth it in the end!

Please encourage your students to attend tutoring should they need some additional support. Tutoring really makes a difference! Transportation is also now available. Please note that bus stops are in general areas so students will have to decide which stop is closest to their home.

Teacher Professional Development
ORHS and OCPS place a high premium on continuing education for our teachers . . .

The staff that attends close reading professional development together, grows together. Our diverse team of DPLC (District Professional Learning Community) members are bringing back imperative training for the entire staff.

The 5 steps our teachers use in planning for a CLOSE READ with their students:
  1. Select the standard being taught
  2. Select the text
  3. Analyze for complexity
  4. Individually read and annotate
  5. Adjust for lesson and learner need

Teacher Spotlight
Meet Jenevive Jackson - Digital Video TV Production Instructor

Ms. Jackson, Digital Video TV Production
Ms. Jackson graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications. During that time she interned at WESH Channel 2 and Orange TV, the government channel. She worked as a videographer for SeaWorld's Discovery Cove before taking a full time job as a technical director in the Distance Education TV Production Studio at USF College of Engineering. At that time Ms. Jackson began freelance work filming weddings.

She began working for Bright House at the Sports station which was called Catch 47 back then. She then moved back to Orlando and worked for News 13 as an audio operator and became a substitute teacher to make extra money. Ms. Jackson enjoyed subbing so she pursued her certification to teach full time and was hired at ORHS to teach 10th grade English. She was then relocated to teach TV Production and hasn't looked back since.

Ms. Jackson enjoys teaching because it allows her to constantly learn. Ms. Jackson also shared that she has learned more teaching than she did when she was working in the business world. Her goal is to send students through 4 years of the TV Production program so they can go out into the world and start their own video production company or get a good job in the field.
