The following appeared in a Special Announcement released on November 7, 2018:

The Rev. Thomas Meyers Van Culin

The Reverend Thomas Meyers Van Culin (age 80) died of respiratory complications and heart failure this past Sunday, November 4, 2018.
Tom was ordained to the Diaconate on September 1, 1991, and to the Priesthood  on March 15, 1992, by the Rt. Rev. Donald P. Hart.  Following ministry as a prison chaplain, Tom served as the as the Vicar of St. Matthew's Church, Waimanalo, from 1993 to 2007, and Vicar of St. Luke's Church, Honolulu, from 2007 to 2010. Tom was raised at the Cathedral of St. Andrew.  Before leaving for the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1986 to prepare for ordination, he was a lay leader of his Parish (St. Christopher's Church, Kailua), the Diocese (including service on the Standing Committee), and the Episcopal Church (including service on the Executive Council).  Tom was resident at the Lunalilo Home at the time of his death.  He is survived by his wife, Tina; his children, Tori and Drew (and their families); and his hanai son, Sean.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated in thanksgiving for Tom's life this coming Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 10:00 AM, in the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu.

ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Tom, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that he and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.  May he rest in peace. Amen.

The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

Hurricane Yutu Causes Widespread Devastation in Micronesia and Philippines
During the last week of October, category 5 Typhoon Yutu (Typhoon Rosita in the Philippines) wreaked havoc over the islands of Micronesia and the Philippines. Widespread devastation and deaths have been reported in Tinian, Saipan and the Philippines, by what has been the most powerful tropical cyclone worldwide in 2018.

Pictured above, damage at St. Paul's in Saipan and a family compound, and at far right, Irene Egmalis Maliaman, Archdeacon of the Episcopal Church in Micronesia, was at the Annual Meeting on the Big Island when the storm hit.  Maliaman serves as Rector of St. John's in Guam and also Vicar for St. Paul's.  She has been in touch with the Cathedral of St. Andrew staff, who will be taking up a special collection at all services this Sunday, November 11 for St. Paul's.  (Read the Cathedral article HERE.)

More information on how you can help will be coming soon.   Please continue to pray for all those impacted by storms and hurricanes around the world. Donations to Episcopal Relief & Development provide critical emergency assistance to those most in need.

A message from Bishop Fitzpatrick
This Sunday, November 11
Commemorating the Death of Queen Lili'uokalani

There will be a special Evensong on Sunday, November 11, 2018 beginning at 5:30 PM, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu, to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the death of Queen Liliʻuokalani. In keeping with historic Church practice, this commemoration is observed on November 11 as the date of the Queen's death, and, therefore, when she entered into the greater glory of God and the communion of saints.

The Episcopal Church's liturgical calendar now authorizes this observance for local use on this day. As a Diocese, we have resolved to encourage Queen Liliʻuokalani's inclusion in the general liturgical calendar for the entire Church.  An important part of that movement will be need to be that we encourage commemorations throughout the Diocese.  The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music was directed to present "the 80th General Convention [in 2021] with a clear and unambiguous plan for a singular calendar of 'Lesser Feasts and Fasts.'" Local commemorations are strongly encouraged and the Queen is accounted as such.  We must encourage commemorations throughout the Diocese providing liturgical resources (I will look to the Native Hawaiian Ministry Committee to take up this work for the good of the whole Diocese).  We then need to share it nationally and internationally (encouraging a cultus of particular popular devotion in remembrance of the Queen).  We also need to build an argument about why the Queen should more than a "local" commemoration and is a witness to the whole Church.  We can then return in 2021 to press for her inclusion in the liturgical calendar (or maybe in 2024).

What can you do?  If you are on Oahu, you can attend and encourage attendance at the Cathedral's Evensong (Sunday, November 11th, at 5:30 PM). That morning in your local worship, remember the Queen in the Prayers of the People.  You might you include the following collect:

Traditional language:
Almighty God, we praise thee for the life and witness of Queen Lili ʻ uokalani, who in the midst of great adversity remained steadfast in her commitment to peace, forgiveness and service to thee. Accept, we pray, our gratitude for a faithful example in her perseverance, her gift of song, and her love for her people. All this we ask in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemporary language:
Almighty God, we praise you for the life and witness of Queen Lili ʻ uokalani, who in times of great adversity remained steadfast in her commitment to peace, forgiveness and service to you. Accept, we pray, our gratitude for a faithful example in her perseverance, her gift of song, and her love for her people. All this we ask in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For those on Oahu, I do hope you can be with us at the Cathedral for Evensong on November 11 (5:30 PM).  I certainly pray that the entire Diocese will remember the Queen on that Sunday.

Your faithfully,
Bob

The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

Note:  This special Evensong will feature the Cathedral Choir with special guests the Nā Wai Chamber Choir, with music by Queen Lili'uokalani, the Hawaiian setting for Evensong by John McCreary, and an anthem by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Established in 2009, Nā Wai is a women's vocal ensemble that celebrates the works of women, preserves and propagates Native Hawaiian music, and champions repertoire for treble voices. Their singers are an incredible group of women who gather together to empower, inspire, and thrive through the highest level of artistry.

In the News: Holy Apostles

The Rev. Katlin McAllister of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Hilo was featured in an Episcopal News Service (ENS) article by Lynette Wilson, Managing Editor of ENS. Wilson, who was covering the Episcopal Asiamerica National Consultation on O'ahu last month, had asked about visiting congregations in the Diocese while she was in the islands.  With the worldwide news of the volcanic eruptions and destruction it caused, she was especially interested in seeing the work our churches were doing there.  Pictured above, Wilson took this photo at the newly completed tiny homes of Hale Iki Village with Pastor Dion Maeda of Connect Point Church and Rev. Presiding Bishop Curry Releases
The Power of Love

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry released his newest book,  The Power of Love , on October 29 in London, and on the 30th in the United States. In  The Power of Love,   Presiding Bishop Michael Curry shares five of his favorite sermons on love and social justice that all exemplify one unified message, a message that we at the church value deeply, that "There's power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There's power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There's power in love to show us the way to live."  The book is now available in stores and on Amazon HERE.

Advent Resources: Journeying the Way of Love and Preparing to Become the Beloved Community

[November 2, 2018] This Advent, the Episcopal Church invites congregations, dioceses, and communities of faith to await the coming of Christ by moving through the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke.  Luke's gospel provides a pattern for understanding how to live the way of love as individuals, as families and friends, as a community, and out in the world.

Advent curriculum:  Journeying the Way of Love

Journeying the Way of Love is a new, four-week Advent curriculum pegged to readings and themes from the Sunday lectionary. Sessions are designed for use during the Christian formation hour offerings at churches and ministries exploring the Way of Love.

Participants are encouraged to read and reflect on the passages in Luke throughout Advent and "try on" the spiritual practices of the Way of Love. The Journey of Love Advent Calendar offers daily suggestions for engaging in the seven practices that encompass the Way of Love.

The curriculum and advent calendar can be downloaded HERE.

Advent is a season of preparation; a time to prepare our hearts and communities for the coming of Christ, the Almighty God who came among us poor and homeless, a stranger and a child. There may be no better time to reflect on how we, as the Episcopal Church, embrace the Holy One who continues to draw near in the neighbor, the stranger, the refugee, or the one who seems the most "other" to you. It is the ideal season to commit to becoming the Beloved Community and growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God.

The journey is framed around the four quadrants of the labyrinth: Telling the truth about our churches and race; proclaiming the dream of the beloved community; practicing the way of love in the pattern of Jesus; and repairing the breach in institutions and society. Groups are invited to "walk" sections of the labyrinth each week in Advent, engaging in scripture, reflections, and activities.

The curriculum may be downloaded  HERE .
