ALEXANDER COUNTY CENTER
August 2020
The Alexander County Center is now open to the public.  To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the health of county employees, citizens who are sick or running a fever should not visit these facilities. Citizens who do visit are encouraged to wear a cloth face covering and maintain social distance of at least six feet.   The county still encourages business to be conducted via phone or email when possible, but realizes that in-person interaction is necessary in some cases.   Agents are still available, so please call them at 828-632-4451 or email.  For a list of email addresses click the following link:   https://alexander.ces.ncsu.edu/people/

Shop Local at the Alexander Farmers' Market
The Alexander Farmers' Market is still open in the old hospital parking lot on Saturday's from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This year's market has a hand washing station and participants must follow special "social distancing" along with other specific market rules. Please adhere to the new COVID-19 rules or you will be asked to leave. The Alexander Farmers' Market is a great place to get local produce and items.

Some items typically available include: onions, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, potatoes, okra, green beans, corn, squash, cantaloupes, peaches, various plants, baked goods, honey, soaps, jams and jellies, plants, flowers, and much more. To have the "Fresh Produce, Locally Grown" sign all items must be grown or produced locally or in our region of North Carolina. The Alexander Farmers' Market is dedicated to keeping this a clean family oriented market. Market spaces are only $5 a spot for anyone wanting to sell some extra garden vegetables or fruits, jams or jellies, or homemade crafts. Our Farmers' Market is sponsored by the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.   So for more information call us at 632-4451.

Let's join together and support our local and adjoining county producers. Don't miss out, come join us Saturday mornings as we will definitely have the freshest produce in town.

Alexander County 4-H Update
Due to COVID-19 our 2020 Summer events have looked a lot different, but with that being said our youth have still been active with 4-H and the 4-H Alexander County Facebook page has been active with videos for youth to take advantage of.  We wanted to recap some of the events our youth have participated in.

N.C. 4-H Electric Congress - Calvin Rowe, Kaylor Berwick, Lucas Ritchie, and Merylin Davis, 4-H Volunteer Leader, attended the virtual conference.  An Alexander County 4-H Alumni, Seth Tadt, was one of the presenters at the conference as well.

N.C. 4-H Congress - Anna Beth Harris and Kaylor Berwick attended the virtual conference that was held July 20-23, 2020.  Anna Beth received a State 4-H Volunteer Award.  Congratulations Anna Beth!!

Virtual 4-H Rocket Camp was held in July.  Rockets were sent home with youth to build and decorate.  The youth returned them to the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center to be launched off on July 24th.  This event was sponsored by United Way of Alexander County to purchase the rockets and materials for participating youth.  Here is a link to the video of the rocket launching:  Watch Virtual 4-H Rocket Launch HERE

4-H Alexander County Facebook Page:  DJ Salyer, Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development and Kristen Parrish, 4-H Summer Intern, produced several virtual experiences over the summer.  Make sure to check out the following link:  4-H Alexander County Facebook
