From the Pastor
RRCC feels blessed to be able to re-introduce our support of Week of Compassion after some years of dormancy.
Week of Compassion is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. The mission of Week of Compassion is "to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and the promotion of mission opportunities."
Gifts to Week of Compassion can be made at any time of the year, but February is the traditional month of emphasis. Here at RRCC, February 24th is our target Sunday in which to offer our gifts to this important ministry. You'll hear more about Week of Compassion during worship this Sunday and next.
I've always understood Week of Compassion's emphasis to be two-fold: 1. year-round readiness to respond to disasters; and 2. ongoing development to avoid crises or at least mitigate their severity. I look forward to sharing a little bit about Week of Compassion these next two Sundays.
Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mitch

Week of Compassion
February 17-24, 2019
Special Offering to be given Sunday, February 24
Hurricane Irma devastated the town of Cojímar at the east of Havana in the north coast of the province. Week of Compassion is helping the community rebuild.
"I thought the world needed my answers, but as it turns out, I needed the world's questions. I needed to learn how to doubt well, listen better, and be humbled by how little I know.... Before you can make your mark on the world, let the world make its mark on you. Be curious. Stay open. Nurture the humility it takes to admit you can get it wrong." Rachel Held Evans

All Are Welcome at the Table!
Here at Round Rock Christian Church we welcome and celebrate diversity!
Inclusion is rooted in our understanding of God, the Creator who made all humanity in God's own image. Just as Jesus loved all humanity, our congregation and our denomination--the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)--welcome the breadth of human life into membership and ministry.
Our Lord's all-encompassing love challenges us today to confront our own prejudices and manifest inclusion in our congregations and personal lives.

They will be in the "Completed Requests" Workroom mail box if you are looking for them.

It'll be a HOWLING good morning when RRCC delivers a delicious "grab-and-go" breakfast to 100 teachers and staff at Union Hill Elementary School (home of The Wolves!) on Tuesday, February 19.
A task force has been at work to plan for this special way for us to embrace our neighbors with Christ-like love with our presence and a spread including jumbo gourmet muffins baked by our own Anna Marie Blair, Melba Claymon, Janette Johnston, Susan Kessler, Ilene Kiser, Pam Knight, Liz Maybaum, Tricia Mouser, and Tasha York.
A drawing will be held for two hand-crafted bowl cozies, courtesy of Jackie Switzer. Barbara Barnett, Linda Glover, Tara Pollock and Pastor Mitch Maxted also are part the team that is organizing and will be on hand to greet the Union Hill staff on February 19. Any member of the congregation is welcome to join us!

Embracing our Neighbors at Union Hill Elementary School and Hopewell Middle School
Under the excellent direction of Linda Glover, RRCC folks responded generously to the special needs of many of our neighborhood children and youth through the adopt-a-child Christmas gift program at Union Hill and Hopewell.
Our church received the followed note of appreciation from the counselors at Union Hill:
"Thank you for supporting the UHE holiday adoption program. Because of your generous contribution we were able to provide gifts for 148 children. We could not have made that possible without your help!"

Special thanks to all of the church "small groups" that have volunteered to host a Fellowship Lunch in 2019! This is the most current "draft schedule" of the monthly lunches, with a few menus and details to be determined as the dates get closer. DWM "kicked-off" the lunches this year, with donations of over $400 received for the January luncheon. Revenues from the lunches (moving forward) will be put in a reserve fund for use with property needs, as they arise. These lunches have become a regular source of wonderful fellowship with each other...a time to sit back and enjoy visiting with friends over a meal. Our neighborhood firefighters also enjoy any residual foods!
What a blessing to "Grow" in community and fellowship!

Hopewell Giftcards
Continuing our focus on children, we are seeking your support once again to help fund giftcards to be used as student incentives by the principals and counselors at Hopewell Middle School.
To "jolt" your memory, we donate a $5 giftcard to Hopewell Middle School and they, in turn, let the students earn the card with good behavior and improvement. This incentive program works very well, so we are asking you to donate as many $5's as you feel you can. We will take the donations, buy the gift cards, and deliver them to the principal. If you are so moved, please make your checks out to RRCC and write "giftcards" in the memo line. Voila, you have helped a student in his or her success! Feels good, doesn't it?
Please place your offering indicated "Hopewell" in the collection plate on Sunday. Thank you for your support in this project serving our mission, "Embracing Our Neighborhoods with Christ-Like Love!"
Bring your donations on February 17th or February 24th!

On
March 3rd, 2019, we will commission
4 new Stephen Ministers:
Ilene Kiser, Gayle Boles, Jean Bell, and Darlia Hunt.
These
four
people have taken 50 hours of specialized training in Christian caregiving through the National Program led by the Stephen Alliance of the surrounding communities.
Stephen Ministers provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to people experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receiver for about an hour to listen, care, encourage, pray, and provide emotional and spiritual support for the person. These caring relationships last as long as the person's need persists.
Please lift up our new Stephen Ministers in your prayers, asking that God bless their ministry and work through them to bring hope and healing to those they will serve. Pray also for the continued ministry of
all RRCC's
Stephen Ministers.
Our congregation is one of more than 13,000 worldwide, representing 160 Christian denominations, that uses the Stephen Series system of lay caring ministry developed by Stephen Ministries in St. Louis.

Box Tops for Education
Bring your Box Tops to benefit our community's children at Union Hill Elementary School. Several people have said they forget to bring the box tops in. Put them somewhere you will remember - like on top of the items you have for the Serving Center. Don't forget they expire, so you want to get them in ASAP.
The school can use the money for anything it needs! Computers, books, and playground equipment are just some of the ways schools have chosen to use the funds raised through Box Tops for Education.
for special offers, coupons, and to track the progress of the school. Please look for the labels on all items you buy and don't forget to bring them to church and place in the collection box each week. Thank you!!

Pantry Focus for February: Heat and Eat Meals
"...for I was hungry and you gave me food. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me
." (Matthew 25:35, 40)
This is "Heat & Eat Meals Month" at RRCC. Let's load our food pantry tub in the Welcome Center to overflowing each Sunday! Your donations of Heat & Eat Meals* (or cash or check designated for the Round Rock Area Serving Center) will help stock empty shelves and feed hungry neighbors in our community.
Mark your grocery list every week for the Round Rock Area Serving Center.
(*Heat & Eat means open it, heat it, serve it - no need to add anything, including water. Examples: Canned meats, canned pasta meals, off-the-shelf heat/eat meals, canned stews, etc.)

Elder's Prayer Corner/Closing Message
Often it is said that prayer is simply an expression of helplessness, is asking from another what we cannot do ourselves. This is a half-truth. The praying person not only says, "I can't do it and I don't understand it," but also, "Of myself, I don't have to be able to do it; and of myself, I don't have to understand it." When you stop at that first phrase, you often pray in confusion and despair, but when you can also add the second, you feel your dependence no longer as helplessness but as a joyous openness to others.
If you view your weakness as a disgrace, you will come to rely on prayer only in extreme need and consider prayer as a forced confession of your impotence. However, if you see your weakness as that which makes you worth loving, and if you are always prepared to be surprised at the power the other gives you, you will discover through praying that "living" means "living together."
Henri Nouwen
With Open Hands, 1972.
Loving, patient God, we admit that we need you! We can't do it alone. We need you and we need friends. Help us to see the error of a society that tries to convince us that our worth depends on our strength
and self-
sufficiency
. May we recall the important message we sang with great joy as children: "Little ones to Him belong. They are weak, but He is strong."
You love us. This we know. Amen.
