I. Planned Parenthood Enshrining Abortion in State Law, anticipating the demise of Roe and Doe

In October,  Planned Parenthood announced it's new strategy  to proceed state by state to enshrine abortion in state law and in state constitutions. This strategy will no doubt also be used by International Planned Parenthood and other pro abortion organizations. Planned Parenthood has the financial resources (thanks to your tax dollars) to pull off this massive Legal and PR campaign.

The fruit is seen already in reproductive health bills introduced in NY, Rhode Island, Virginia and elsewhere.

Regarding proposed Virginia House Bill 2491, it is important to understand what is does and does not say. The bill states that it would be lawful to terminate a pregnancy anytime in the third trimester (from 27 weeks gestation until birth) if, "based upon the physician's best clinical judgment", continuation of the pregnancy is likely to result in the death of the woman or "impair the mental or physical health of the woman" (Emphasis added). The bill contains no definition of the precise meaning of the terms "mental or physical health of the woman". This determination is left to the sole judgment of the abortionist with no oversight whatsoever. This proposed legislation, on it's face, would clearly legalize abortion up to the moment of birth for, essentially, any reason.

Our friends and colleagues in AAPLOG have prepared excellent testimony against these bills.

What can you do?
If a pro-abortion bill is proposed in your state contact Ronni Ann at  admin@acpeds.org  and we will provide the AAPLOG materials to you so that you and fellow pro-life colleagues can testify on behalf of our unborn patients in your state.

II. Concerns about Marijuana Use
The legalization of marijuana spreading across the United States either for medical use or recreational use, may leave an impression with our youth that it's 'no big deal.' Science makes it clear that recreational use of marijuana among teenagers and young adults may have long-term repercussions and it is not recommended. See the College position statements on this:

Also, please note this recent article on Marijuana, Mental Illness and Violence.

Finally, please print and share this handout, " Marijuana is Not Safe for Youth," for your adolescent patients.
III. Diagnosing Autism - the Latest Breakthrough

"We have developed an objective, quantitative algorithm based on salivary RNA abundance that accurately discriminates children with Austim Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from peers with developmental delay (DD) or typical development (TD). This non-invasive test could augment the accuracy of current ASD assessment, as an adjunctive tool for children with positive Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (MCHAT) screening, or an objective aid in ASD diagnosis."

~Rachel L. Hoffman, MA, LLP

This groundbreaking epigenetic test is indicated for children 18 months to six years old. It tests RNA saliva molecules with a noninvasive, quick swab and differentiates autistic vs. typical developing children.

This test shows a definitive "objective" measure that can help solidify a diagnosis. Please note, it is best practice to be used in conjunction with the MCHAT (parent report) or ADOIS and we do not want to replace the formal testing component or take away from the neuropsychologists. This test can enhance the diagnosis process as well as help create a better direction for treatment.

Also, parents are somewhat in denial at times and do not want to accept an autism diagnosis, so this helps to take the subjective observation out of the picture.
