Show Up for Shul
...And Please Show Up Early
Special Recognition Tomorrow at 9:54 a.m.

My friend, Rabbi Chuck Diamond (it's likely you saw him on TV), said that more casualties were averted last Shabbat because Jews do not come early to Shul. I'm asking you to come on time - or at least by 9:45 a.m. - because we will pause during the service at 9:54 a.m., the time that the attack began.
We will have at least two "Marks" in Shul: Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and our Shul President, Mark Altschul.  We will also be joined by Onnuri Church Pastor, Rev. Marc Choi, and Rev. Rick Spenst of the Fort Lee Gospel Church.

Whatever you may think of President Trump, this is an unequivocal statement for which he should be commended (even though I think his rhetoric may have green-lighted Bowers and others): "This evil, anti-Semitic attack is an assault on all of us. It's an assault on humanity. It will require all of us working together to extract the hateful poison of anti-Semitism from our world....We must stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters to defeat anti-Semitism and vanquish the forces of hate...and those seeking their destruction, we will seek their destruction."

I don't feel ill-at-ease wearing my kippa on the streets of Bergen County or in the City - and this article... while it statistics are shocking, doesn't make me less comfortable. What bothers me the most is that the article points to, but does not emphasize, the indifference (if not the Anti-Semitism) of progressives. Here's a quote from the article: "Mainstream progressive advocacy groups do not typically send out emails calling for concern [for Jews] and fellowship and candlelight vigils in Union Square, as they often do when individuals are harmed in New York because of their race or ethnicity or how they identify in terms of gender or sexual orientation."
"If anti-Semitism bypasses consideration as a serious problem in New York, it is to some extent because it refuses to conform to an easy narrative with a single ideological enemy."
"It is the varied backgrounds of people who commit hate crimes in the City that make combating and talking about anti-Semitism in New York much harder."

Sarah dies at the age of one hundred twenty-seven. Abraham purchases the Cave of Machpelah as a burial site for her, courteously refusing the offer of the Hittite population to provide a fitting-resting place as a gift.
 
Abraham sends a trusted servant to the city of Haran with the purpose of finding a wife for Isaac. The servant encounters a considerate, compassionate girl at the city's well. She is Rebecca, granddaughter of Nahor, Abraham's brother. Betuel, Rebecca's father, and Laban, Rebecca's brother, welcome the servant ho   spitably. He tells them of his mission and presents them with many gifts. They consent to the marriage of Rebecca to Isaac.
 
We are informed of the marriage of Abraham to Ketura, with whom he had many sons and through whom he became the father to many Arab tribes. To make it perfectly clear that Isaac is Abraham's only heir, Abraham sends these sons away laden with gifts, leaving Isaac as sole possessor of his property and spiritual heritage.
 
Abraham dies at the age of one hundred seventy-five; Isaac and Ishmael bury him in the Cave of Machpelah.

Prior to The Last of the Unjust, Lanzmann grappled with the existence of Czechoslovakia's Theresienstadt, a fortress town that the Nazis presented as a "model Jewish settlement" for propaganda purposes. His tête-à-tête with Maurice Rossel (filmed in 1979) hinges on the latter's tour of the camp in his capacity as a representative of the International Red Cross-and his subsequent evaluation, in which he accorded it a positive grade; Lanzmann presents the man with damning evidence.
