Can You "Escape" Your Regular Classroom Routine? The Next Academy Workshop Challenges You!
Can your team defeat the Escape Room challenge? Can your group triumph in the scratch-card playoffs? Find out in the next Cornerstone Series workshop, Making an Impact with Collaborative Learning. Considered by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as a "high-impact teaching practice" (positively associated with student learning and retention), collaborative learning will kick face-to-face and online classroom activities and assignments into high gear.
This two-part workshop, facilitated by Melissa Baysingar, Instructional Design Specialist, will provide innovative examples of collaboration in the traditional and online classrooms, hands-on experience with different collaborative learning activities and methods, and a forum to propose and receive feedback on collaborative learning ideas for your own classroom.

Wheeler, Associate Professor in the department of Educational Inquiry & Curriculum Studies at Northeastern Illinois University, explores these two important questions in her upcoming webinar, Constructing Difference: Understanding the Role of Social Justice in Our Classroom. The DREAMER Resource For Excellence Grant Team in collaboration with the DACAmented and Undocumented Student Group have developed a survey about faculty and staff knowledge and perceptions of undocumented students and students with DACA at Harper College. This anonymous survey will help inform the team as they develop professional development opportunities for all employees. Please take a moment to fill out the survey.

The Legacy of the Calendar Girls

As described by Trygve Thoreson in
Harper College: The First 50 Years, the predominately male administration's attitudes regarding gender and identity in Harper's early years were "firmly entrenched in the times" leaving plans for developing women's athletics programs "limited" and "Calendar Girls" donning the pages of the student newspaper right along with the calendar of campus events. The "Calendar Girls" were a regular feature of the newspaper, and their descriptions focused on their physical attributes and what they could add to the campus community via their beauty over other qualities such as activities and scholarship. For example, a calendar girl who was a nursing student was described by
Harbinger staff as "a really pulsating attraction in white or among the books" and another was called "a fresh beauty of a freshman worth watching...another one of the lovely misses who grace the ivyless halls."

ForwardFocus OER Conference
This year's conference is dedicated to OER in community colleges. As institutions struggle to cut costs and eliminate barriers to student achievement, librarians are called to find solutions. OER initiatives have gained momentum and offer a promising path to overcoming budget constraints and textbook affordability issues for students.
This conference is open to all who want to learn about OER.

No Standardized Tests, No Homework, No School Inspections? The Secrets to Finland's Educational Success
Come learn about how Finland uses equity, trust, autonomy, and equality to promote excellence in student success. Jennifer E. Bell, Professor in Adult Educational Development and Lisa Busto, Assistant Professor, Accounting, and doctoral students in the DCCL (Doctorate in Community College Leadership) program with Ferris State University, participated in a 10-day study abroad to Finland where they toured a variety of schools from pre-school to university level in Helsinki in the south and Lapland on the Arctic Circle.
During this International Education Week program, Jennifer and Lisa will explain the basics of the Finnish school system, and reflect on their observations of why Finland's schools have been deemed the best in the world! They will end the presentation with a discussion about how we might incorporate elements of the Finnish system, and if it is possible to implement the Finnish structure in the United States.
