Sermon on the Amount

Good Morning, let me introduce myself to those who are newcomers and visitors. I’m Leah MacSwords, the Senior Warden. The bulletin says I’m providing the sermon, but I’m not a member of the clergy. So if you were expecting an explanation of religious doctrine from one of them, you’ll have to come back next week.

Why am I giving today’s homily?

Along with today being All Saints Sunday, it’s also Stewardship Sunday. I was asked by Susie Oder, our Stewardship Chair, to talk with you. Junior Warden Jim King laughed and said she wants you to give the Sermon on the Amount.

Oh No! I had to think about this before agreeing because:

  • The only topic after sin that makes us squirm more in our seats is giving to the church.  
  • Besides it’s not my job to make you squirm in your seats. That task belongs to Father Jessee.
  • Plus nobody likes talking about money! Makes no difference if you’re in the “haves enough” or “needs more” categories. We don’t like it. It’s private.
'Bells of Peace' to ring November 11

The World War One Centennial Commission - along with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, the Society of the Honor Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the National Cathedral, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars - has announced a nationwide bell-tolling on November 11 as a solemn reminder of the sacrifice and service of veterans of the Great War, and all veterans.

Bells of Peace: A World War One Remembrance encourages citizens and organizations across the nation to toll bells in their communities 21 times at 11 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 11. Ascension's tower bell will toll in unison during our 10:30 service.

This nationwide program is designed to honor Americans who served 100 years ago during World War I, especially the 116,516 who died. The war ended by an armistice agreement at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

ECUMENICAL FOOD DRIVE
for the Franklin County Emergency Food Pantry
Sunday, November 11

Please bring non-perishable items to church ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 11.

Please note that the food drive is organized by the Food Pantry for collection at specific times, when most needed. Many groups take collected items to the Food Pantry on the designated date. Collection of food items here at church is not year-round; we do not have appropriate space/personnel for continuous collection, storage and delivery of items throughout the year. Please bring all of your food item donations only during the designated collection times (usually once or twice a year).

Monetary donations may be made payable to ‘Church of the Ascension’ with a memo for the Food Pantry and submitted in the collection plate or to the office. All money goes directly for food purchases; no funds are used for administrative support. CLICK HERE for a list of suggested items.

Eat, rest and warm up in our historic parish hall. We offer hearty chili to please everyone - hot or mild, meaty or vegetarian - along with hot dogs, drinks and desserts. A small donation is requested from those who are able; those in need are welcome to stop in for a free meal! This fundraiser for the Ascension Men's Club helps support the free hot breakfast offered to those in need every Sunday, and other charitable works.

If you can work at the event or contribute a homemade dessert, please coordinate with Starla Yount ( starlayount@yountproperties.com ) . We also encourage you to come and circulate with the crowd as a ‘greeter’ or stroll downtown with a sign for advertising. Wear your Ascension t-shirt! 
CAYA will meet on Saturday, November 17, 7-9 p.m. in the parish library, to help get ready for Christmas… including setting up the Angel Tree and more. All teens and young adults are welcome! Contact Chris Smith ( wenchltd64@gmail.com ).

ABOUT THE INCOME SPIKES: Income and expense numbers in the chart above do include ALL donations and pass-thru amounts, such as those designated for Capital Campaign, Music Fund, Reading Camp, Food Pantry, etc., which accounts for large spikes on the graphs. The income spike shown in August 2018 is due to a Line of Credit Loan for $20,000 which was incurred on 8/17/18 to carry us through the coming months. This precaution is mainly due to very high maintenance costs this year. Monthly expenses are recorded only at the end of each month, calculated as a weekly average.

Jesus Calls Us O’er the Tumult is based on Matthew 4:18-20. The hymn text was written by Cecil Frances Alexander, wife of the archbishop of the Anglican Church in Ireland. The tune Galilee was written for Jesus calls us by William Herbert Jude for The Congregational Church Hymnal, published in London in 1887.
