LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Do you remember...the 21st night of September?! Ehh, a few days late...but hey, goodbye summer - hello fall! We're well into the "-bers" (as in the months) so that means we're nose deep into the PSL aka PUMPKIN SPICE LIFE! Let's stop to enjoy the fact that Costco has Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations all at once. The feeling that it's still nearly 100 degrees outside...while the rest of the country is moving on with the actual season changing. Yet it's getting dark sooner and the APA-CA Conference in San Diego is creeping up so there is an upside! Hope you're all registered - but if not, it's never too late to join in on the fun. Get on it though, it's coming up in just about 2 weeks!

2018 HISTORIC SYMPOSIUM: ONTARIO - OCT 23

By: Karen Watkins, Section Historian

For many of us, Autumn, or as some say Fall, brings fond memories of changing colors across the landscape, falling leaves, and the most fun of raking the yard into a pile of leaves to jump in (no leaf blowers back then)!  My favorite foods are from Autumn also...soups, squash, and pumpkin pie!

October brings cooler days (OK, most anything is cooler than the July we just experienced), blue skies and a longing to get outside.  Here is your opportunity to join us as we spend time in Ontario learning about the agriculture of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Graber Olive House has been sorting and packing olives in Ontario since 1894.  Come visit their historic shop and cannery in a pleasant residential area north of Ontario's business district.  Rosalie and her tour guides give us a private tour and we each leave with a tasty can of olives.  You may even have time to shop their store before winding your way to Huerta Del Valle, an urban organic garden providing sustainable community empowerment and health.  Lunch will be first on the agenda at noon with an offering of delicious seasonal vegetables and fruits in Maria's homemade recipes.  Maria Teresa Alonso, Executive Director, and Arthur Levine, Project Manager, will feed us and share their hopes and dreams for the garden that are already coming to fruition!

The limit for the day is 50 people, so sign up soon.  Cost is $35 including lunch and olives.
More information will be provided as we move closer to the date.  For questions, please call Karen Watkins at 909-387-4218 or email Karen.Watkins@lus.sbcounty.gov.
