North Dakota's Gross Domestic Product was $49 billion in 2017, representing a one percent increase from the previous year. While the increase is small and follows two years of negative change, the economy overall is substantially larger than it was 10 years ago.

Prairie Roots Food Co-op, a community-owned grocery store opened in July 2017 with the mission to provide healthy, natural food for everyone in the community. In September that year, the Co-op's nonprofit branch, Prairie Roots Community Fund (PRCF) was incorporated to focus on extending food access and community support in Fargo-Moorhead to those who do not always have the security of knowing where their next meal is coming from, much less whether it will be a healthy one.
In this article, Jen Walla, the PRCF sponsored VISTA (AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America) tasked with the development of community gardening programs, talks about the multifaceted impacts of food insecurity and ways PRCF is working to improve access to fresh, nutritious, high quality food for everyone in the community.
