Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Please share your news and events by noon each Friday to be considered for the following week's issue of Oculus.

TODAY: Auburn University School of Architecture Head to Lecture on "Robert L. Faust and the Design Build Approach"

Christian Dagg, Head of the School of Architecture at Auburn University, will lecture this evening on "Robert L. Faust and the Design Build Approach," as part of the Renegades American School Dream Course. Dagg teaches in the Architecture and Real Estate Development Programs. He received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the School of Architecture AIAS in 2002 and 2006, the CADC Outstanding Teaching Award in 2005 and the CADC Collaborative Initiative Award in 2004. More recently with his colleague Kevin Moore, he was a 2013 recipient of the NCARB Award for their project entitled "Studio: Urban Healthcare." His recent research examines the pedagogy and practices of American School architect Robert Faust. Dagg is a principal of Hinson + Dagg Architects, a firm that has been recognized at the local and state level with AIA design awards. He has experience working for Machado and Silvetti Associates and Kallmann, McKinnell and Wood Architects. He holds a Masters in Architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1999 with Distinction) and a Bachelor of Science in Art degree from Northeastern University (1993 Magna Cum Laude).

Students and Faculty Visit Merriman Anderson Architects and Balfour Beatty in Dallas

Over 100 students and faculty from the Interior Design, Construction Science and Architecture programs visited the offices of Merriman Anderson Architects and Balfour Beatty for a field trip to Dallas last Friday. The field trip included a firm tour and project presentations by Merriman Anderson and tours of the Epic Office and Pittman Hotel project sites by Balfour Beatty. Merriman Anderson also hosted everyone for lunch. Many thanks to Merriman Anderson and Balfour Beatty for your support of our students!

Regional + City Planning Professor to Lecture as Part of "Gender and Justice" Series on Feb. 20

Assistant Professor C. Aujean Lee has been invited to give a lecture for the Women's and Gender Studies Center for Social Justice as part of the "Gender and Justice Speaker Series." This lecture series was created to highlight the scholarship of women faculty members at OU. Dr. Lee will be sharing a presentation entitled "Gateway Metropolitans, Immigrant Neighborhoods: Impacts of Multi-Scale Racial Concentration on Neighborhood Foreclosure Risk."

Spring 2019 Undergraduate Research Day Accepting Applications Until Feb. 25

The Honors College is hosting Undergraduate Research Day, which allows both students whose research was funded through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and students in general to present their research findings. All undergraduate students, including non-Honors students, are eligible and encouraged to submit applications!

Summer 2019 Travel Study: Learn the History of Spain and the Human Geography of Madrid

Where:  Classes will take place in Madrid, with planned excursions to Cádiz, Toledo, Valle de Los Caídos, and El Escorial

Study Abroad in Italy with "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program

Students who participate in the Summer 2019 "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program are invited to walk the historic botanical gardens of Italy, and learn the foundations of natural history and science with Bruce Hoagland, biogeographer. They will also experience splendid Renaissance villa gardens with Tom Woodfin, landscape architect and garden historian. Together, they will learn the history of beloved places whose beauty, plant collections, and structure continue to inspire scientists and artists

Fast Facts
  • The class is based in Arezzo, Italy, and runs from July 8 - August 2, 2019
  • Students can earn six credit hours in two courses: GEOG 3253, Environmental Conservation, and LA 4743, Garden History

In Memoriam
Charles Louis Leider

October 12, 1932 - January 29, 2019

Dr. Charles Leider recently passed away in Stillwater, OK. Dr. Leider was the long-time chair of the landscape architecture program at Oklahoma State University.
