Administrator's Corner

Hello Spartan Families,

For those of you who have a senior here at TJ, please make sure they meet with the representative from Jostens on the 13th and 14th during lunch to place their order for a cap and gown for graduation. The TJ Partners will be holding their monthly PTO meeting next week in room 111 at 6 pm on the 13th. Last but not least, a reminder that there will be no school from the 19th through the 23rd for Thanksgiving Break.

Hola familias espartanas,

SkillsUSA News

SkillsUSA recently participated in the Fall Leadership Conference. It was a wonderful experience for all, and the students have some great reflections about the event!

"The Fall Leadership Conference this year was an amazing experience, and I learned so much about how to improve my own abilities and our chapter. Over the 2 day conference, Jack and I had to present 6 different sessions, which, at first, seemed extremely intimidating, but by the end, my public speaking abilities and confidence increased a lot. I'm extremely happy that our chapter developed so many great fundraising and community service ideas, and we will definitely be implementing several of them to improve our community."-  Co-President Matt Bulger

Countdown to ArtFest 2018 - Calling All Volunteers

Ever wonder about all the invisible hands that go into producing an event? ArtFest has dozens of fabulous behind-the-scenes volunteers who contribute their time and energy to transform TJ's gym into a holiday wonderland and shopper's delight. It's a fun opportunity to lend a hand, meet new people, and help a great event that benefits TJ's classroom grant program. New this year - all volunteers (adults and students) who help with setup and/or cleanup will earn $10/hour for the TJ club/activity/class of their choice! ArtFest supports the entire TJ school community, so don't miss out!

to help with set up, clean up, and a number of other tasks that
make the event possible. Psst! No creativity required! ;)

The PTO is still looking for local businesses to display an 8.5" x 11" poster. If anyone has a connection or works for any of the businesses in the SE Denver area willing to display a poster to advertise the event, please have them contact  Mel Toner at  [email protected] .  Other questions? Send them to  [email protected] .

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
Did You Know?
The holiday season is advertised as a time of joy and giving, filled with food, family, and friends. These advertisements are manufactured in whole by large corporations to pray on the consumer, in part by painting a picture of the perfect holiday. Much less focus has been placed on the negative effects that the holiday season can have on a person. Which is often referred to as holiday stress.

Causes of Holiday Stress
  1. Increased family responsibility as students are on break from school.
  2. Increased spending due to seasonal changes; electric bill, warm clothing, etc.
  3. Increased spending due to holiday shopping; presents, large meals, and travel expenses.
  4. Increased time constraints due to work parties, family gatherings, and vacations.
Ways to Combat Holiday Stress

Strengthen Social Connections: Supportive social relationships can help individuals manage a variety of challenges. The holiday season can be used to reconnect with positive people in our lives. While everyone enjoys gifts, a short phone call or quick lunch date can be just as rewarding.

Set Reasonable Goals: Wanting your child to have a wonderful holiday is expected, but setting unreasonable expectations to meet this goal can lead to stress and anxiety. Understanding what your family is capable of and keeping expectations within those limits will help reduce unnecessary holiday stress. Remember, some things will not go as planned.

Keep Things in Perspective: Remember, holiday season is short! Prioritize your schedule so that your most important holiday tasks are not over looked. Consider mishaps or problems that could possibly occur in order to prepare oneself for future pitfalls. Tasks unrelated to the holiday season, that can be put off until later, can be followed up after the holidays are over.

Get Enough Exercise: Research shows that regular exercise can help people manage stress and anxiety. This stress can be exacerbated by the reduced amount of sunlight in the winter months, as well as dietary changes that occur due to an increased presence of sugary food.

Say, "No": Stress accumulates during the holiday season primarily through constraint on money and time. Holiday events such as parties, gift exchanges, and family trips can cause further constraint on time and money. Knowing how and when to say "no" can alleviate this form of stress.
