Bobkowski to give annual Budig lecture
Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski will present “Telling Stories: How I Learned to Write and Teach Writing” at 4 p.m. March 5 in Watson 3 West in Watson Library. Bobkowski is the recipient of the 2018-2019 Gretchen and Gene Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing. Read the KU News story.
School of Journalism researchers working with KU ’ s Center for Digital Inclusion developed a program to boost digital skills of low-income, older African-Americans to help them identify online scams and misinformation and find relevant health information. The study is forthcoming in the Journal of Applied Communication Research. Authors are Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo , Assistant Professor Joseph Erba , master's student Darcey Altschwager and Associate Professor Mugur Geana . Read the KU News story here.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas and first-year honors student Brandy Gomez have had their research-in-progress paper, "'No Damn Flag:' What Vietnam-Era Flag Desecration Cases Mean Today, " accepted for presentation at the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium in Columbia, South Carolina, in March. They are examining over 80 cases in which flags were desecrated in a variety of ways between 1967 and 1975 and reflecting on the language used by courts in deciding those cases.

Profs. Barbara Barnett and Tien Lee ’s article, “ Chronic pain: Sources’ framing of post-traumatic stress in The New York Times,” has been accepted for publication in the international academic journal  Media, War & Conflict .

Katich Creativity Award nominations
Nominations are now open for the John Katich Award for Creativity. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. Deliver nominations materials to Associate Professor Max Utsler by 5 p.m. March 22. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 10. Learn more here.
Bengtson Faculty Mentoring Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the Bengtson Faculty Mentoring Award. Tim Bengtson  taught and mentored more than 12,000 students during his more than 30 years at KU. During his tenure, Bengtson established a legacy as an outstanding advisor to his students and a trusted friend to his colleagues in the School of Journalism. This award established by alumnus Mark Mears honors and recognizes School of Journalism faculty members who demonstrate Bengtson ’ s dedication to student mentorship. Students or faculty members may nominate an instructor. Deadline for nominations is Feb. 14.

Sportswriter Kavitha Davidson to speak next week
Sportswriter Kavitha Davidson will deliver the keynote at “The Power of Sport: A Conversation on Business, Race and Sports” event at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Burge Union. Davidson has been a feature writer and columnist for espnW, ESPN the Magazine and is writing a book on sports fandom. She previously wrote a daily sports column for Bloomberg with a heavy focus on the intersection of sports and business, race, gender and culture. Learn more here. J-School Career Fair is March 7
The Spring Journalism Career Fair is set for Thursday, March 7, in the Kansas Room on the sixth floor of the Kansas Union. Approximately 30 organizations will be attendance, discussing internships and job opportunities with students from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the event, a photographer will take professional images for students’ LinkedIn profiles.
Contests, Awards and Scholarships
The Missouri Broadcasters Association Radio Talent Institute is accepting applications until March 1. The 10-day session July 29-Aug. 7 at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri, is $395. Limited scholarships are available. Learn more and apply here.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is now accepting applications for its student awards contest. The deadline to enter is Feb. 15, and awards will be presented at the annual Student Seminar on April 2 on the KU campus.   Learn more and enter here.
The 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Action Group Applied Research Award application period is now open. Faculty and doctoral candidates are invited to apply for the award, which provides $5,000 toward the development and execution of a research project. Deadline for submission of proposals is March 15. Diversity & You: The J-School is holding a competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject diversity and you. Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views as it affects them and others. First-place winner will receive $400; second place is $200; third place is $100. Deadline is Friday, March 8. The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is open to women who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at KU with at least a 3.0 GPA. Awards of $2,000 or more will be based on application materials, including essay and financial need. Deadline is March 1. Learn more here.

The Greater Than Gatsby Annual Scholarship supports the future of visual art and content creators. One recipient receives $10,000 annually to be used to help pay their tuition and academic expenses. Deadline to apply is March 1. Learn more here.

JSchool Tech is excited to offer great workshops and learning opportunities this semester as well as daily challenges, Adobe Live events, and other JBar offerings. Students who would like an in-depth, project-based learning opportunity should contact Heather Lawrenz to join a team. As a refresher, teams meet once a week for an hour. These small groups give students the opportunity to solve multiple client challenges using Adobe software. They learn all the new features and tricks in Creative Cloud and maximize it for ultimate creativity.
