Permanency Attorney Training in Missouri
NACC was invited by Casey Family Programs to lead part of the inaugural permanency attorney training in Missouri this October. NACC's
Brooke Silverthorn, Director of Legal and Policy Advocacy,
customized a training to include the Red Book material and Missouri-specific material to provide an overview of federal and state child welfare law. NACC was honored to partner with Casey Family Programs and the Missouri Children's Division in this special training event.

NACC at the American Association of Health and Human Services Attorneys' Annual Conference
Brooke Silverthorn, NACC's Director of Legal and Policy Advocacy, presented at the American Association of Health and Human Services Attorneys' (AAHHSA's) annual conference in Monterey, California on October 16, 2018. As a former Agency attorney herself, Brooke drew on her experience to deliver the presentation:

Spring and Fall 2019 Red Book Training Courses
NACC’s new online
Red Book Training Course
is designed to assist you in preparing for the Child Welfare Law Specialist (CWLS) examination. It can also serve as an overall review of dependency competency areas. The course will consist of seven webinars delivered over a period of 13 weeks.
NACC’s Spring Course begins
Wednesday, March 13, 2019
. All sessions begin at 12pm Mountain Standard Time.
NACC’s staff is ready to assist in registering a group for the course, ordering hard copies of the Red Book, and/or coordinating a cohort to become certified as CWLS. Please

- The Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) has a new tool, the Youth Thrive™ Survey, which "measures the presence, strength, and growth of the Youth Thrive™ Protective and Promotive Factors as proxy indicators of well-being. Organizations will have complete access to the instrument free of charge (cost underwritten by CSSP through October 2019).The survey instrument along with a user manual and technical report is available here. There will be an instructional webinar explaining how to use the survey on November 14, 2018—you can register here. Please contact lisa.primus@cssp.org to get more information.
- University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus has an opening for a full-time Associate Professor/Endowed Chair in Policy, Ethics, and Law. The new hire will lead a novel program at UC "to serve the state, region and nation in developing, testing and disseminating effective legal, ethical and policy approaches to improve care for children". - David Kelly, Special Assistant to the Associate Commissioner at the Children's Bureau, wrote a blog post on why it's time we take the "reasonable efforts" requirement more seriously. If you'd like to see similar posts, visit rethinkingfostercare.blogspot.com and sign up for email updates.
- On October 24th, as part of a panel discussion with other national experts in a forum hosted by the Chronicle of Social Change, the head of Georgia's child welfare agency outlined ways the state can help grandparents, aunts, and other relatives caring for boys and girls whose parents aren't able to.
- American Academy of Pediatrics issues new statement on the use of Corporal Punishment.
- NACC Vice President Leslie Starr Heimov wrote an op-ed after the Washington State Supreme Court issued a ruling that all children do not have a right to a lawyer in dependency court proceedings. NACC joined an amicus brief arguing for children’s right to counsel in Washington state.

The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) is hosting their 2018 Caribbean Conference.
Join experts in Montego Bay on December 2nd - 5th
to collaborate to eradicate neglect and all forms of violence against children through pre-conference workshops, esteemed keynote speakers and the scientific program.
