Lake Nona Middle School

On Tuesday, Feb. 19 we will be releasing student progress reports for the third quarter. We encourage all students to turn in any missing assignments or projects now before their progress report is finalized.

Next Friday, Feb. 15 is our big "Kickin' It Old Style" PTSA dance. With the dance only a few days away now, the PTSA is still looking for some support. This event is very popular with the students so if you can lend our PTSA a hand, it would be sincerely appreciated - volunteer here.

Have a great week and remember that next week is only a four-day week due to the President's Day holiday on Monday, Feb. 18.

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

LITERACY WEEK
The week of January 28 to February 1 was designated Celebrate Literacy Week throughout the state of Florida. Below you will find some highlights from our Literacy Week activities.

Door Decorating Contest
Door decorating contest winner: Mrs. Rivera's Spanish class. They will be enjoying a breakfast one morning soon as a reward.

Bookmark Designs
Some amazing student artists created bookmarks reflecting literacy, reading, or a particular book. Students are voting for their favorite.

Gift Certificates
As students checked out books, they were asked to write their name on a library patron. Five students were selected from all those who checked out during the week. They are being awarded a $10.00 gift certificate to the upcoming book fair. Congratulations to: Stephen Lindsey, Noah Perez, Seth Baum, Maribel Sanchez, and Safi Ali.

SSYRA
Students who had read 5 or more of this year's SSYRA or Sunshine State books attended a Panera breakfast Monday morning in the media center.

Guessing Contest
We also held a contest for students to guess how many books are in the media center. We had a wide variety of guesses. The winner was Vandana Manchikanti, with a guess of 12,500.  There are actually 12,689 books in our library.  Congratulations to Vandana for winning that $10 Subway gift card!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR KICKS OFF THIS WEEK!
This week we will be welcoming the Scholastic Book Fair to the LNMS Media Center. The fair will begin on February 14th and run through February 22nd. The fair will be open before school and after school as well as during the school day. Students will also have the opportunity to visit during their language arts classes.

LNMS accepts cash and credit and debit cards during the fair. In addition, the EWallet option allows parents/guardians to load funds onto an account for their student to access at school during the fair.
The link to access the Ewallet can be found on the school website. You can also visit our fair webpage at CLICK HERE. From there, parents can access the ewallet and add funds. Online shopping is also available. There are thousands more products through the online site. Any of those purchases still benefit the LNMS Media Center and will be shipped to the school at the conclusion of the fair.

Thank you for your support and please remember, books always make great gifts!

Knight Sports

Basketball
Both of our Lake Nona Knight basketball teams remain undefeated with a record of 3-0. Our boys team is currently tied for first place in the division with South Creek and our girls team is also in first place. This past Monday our teams played Meadow Woods at home. Boys won 48-43 and girls won 38-5. Our boys had a challenging game as they faced an athletic Meadow Woods team. One of our key players, Grant Chamberlain, got into early foul trouble; which slightly hurt our momentum as he had to sit out the majority of the first half. Not to worry, as returning 8th graders Richard Serrano and Nichalas Rawls really stepped up for our Knights helping us assure another victory.

The last regular season home game is this Monday against Walker Middle School. This is a special evening for us as we recognize and honor our 8th graders. It will be a fun packed night in the Kingdom so please come out and show our teams support! Tip off for our boys game begins at 5:30pm followed by our girls at 6:30pm!

Track Season Meeting
There will be an informational track meeting immediately after school in the gymnasium on Tuesday, February 12th for anyone interested in trying out for the number one track program in the county!

National School Counselor Week
Feb. 4-8, 2019
This past week we celebrated National School Counseling Week. We took the time to highlight the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping our students achieve school success and plan for a career. Our outstanding counselors are: Jane Milles, Lirisa Duncan, Katherine Ballard and Veronica Pragel.

Knight in the Spotlight

Mathematics with Ms. Nieves
Ms. Nieves welcomed her 8th grade Pre-Algebra students on roller skates and then proceeded to teach a complete lesson in skates. The roller skates were used to help teach a Geometry lesson on translations of objects in relationship to a graph. Ms. Nieves turned her classroom floor into a real-life graph and used roller skates to show how translations occur in math. This lesson is one students will remember! What a great way of bringing a real-life example to the classroom in such a fun way!

Rigor in the Classroom

Sixth Grade Science with Ms. Fountaine
In Ms. Fountaine's 6th grade science classroom, the students were learning about the cell theory. The students looked at different types of cell (plants and animals) under the microscope and read about the scientists who were a part of creating the cell theory through their research. Students observed the same cells as the famous cytologists.

Students working on a cell lab this past Monday.

Knight Black History

Art with Ms. Guyton
In Ms. Guyton's art class, students made collages using construction paper, magazines, and newspaper inspired by the African-American expressionist painter, Alma Woodsey Thomas. Ms. Thomas debuted her abstract work in an exhibition in 1966, at the age of 75. Thomas' abstractions have been compared with Byzantine mosaics, the Pointillist technique of Georges Seurat, and the paintings of the Washington Color School, yet her work is quite distinctive. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, and she also exhibited her paintings at the White House three times.

Language Arts with Ms. Summers
In Ms. Summer's language arts class, students are comparing ideas of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. to the ideas of jazz musicians. Students are learning new vocabulary related to the Civil Rights Movement, paraphrasing King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech and listening to examples of the work of jazz musicians.
