Elizabeth Donnelly appointed as new WES CEO
The Women's Engineering Society (WES) is delighted to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Donnelly as its new Chief Executive Officer.
In her role, Elizabeth, who has a strong record of accomplishment in championing diversity in engineering, will continue to inspire women to succeed as engineers, scientists and leaders, while helping to support companies in strengthening gender diversity and inclusion in the workforce.
Elizabeth commented, 'I am delighted to be appointed Chief Executive at WES as we celebrate our centenary. I am really looking forward to working with our members, partners, other professional engineering institutions and the wider public to showcase the success of women engineers who have gone before us and those who will transform our future.'

WES 'EngTech Ready' Apprentice Conference
Saturday 20 October 2018, EEF Technology Hub, Birmingham
FREE TO ATTEND - limited places
Engineering and construction can be challenging environments in which to train and work, and only 3% of apprentices in these fields are female. Thanks to funding from Arconic, the first-ever WES Apprentice Conference will take place on Saturday 20 October 2018, kindly hosted by EEF at their Training Hub in Aston, Birmingham.
Speakers from EEF, Engineering Council, SEMTA and other key professional organisations will be providing a dynamic mix of hands-on, interactive teamwork sessions along with advice on building your career and profile - and we'll hear from inspirational women engineers who started their careers as apprentices.
Open to: Female engineering apprentices aged 18 and above

Mentoring - What does your organisation do?
Earlier this month representatives from various WES Corporate Partners met for a lively conversation about mentoring, and how it's used in their organisations to support women in engineering careers. The meeting, facilitated by Past-president, Petra Gratton, was hosted by Transport for London at their Victoria Station House offices.
Experiences were wide-ranging from 'nothing happening at present, but we're thinking about it', through informal networks and single-purpose schemes to multi-stranded activity and nationally recognised schemes like Arora and UKNEST in the defence sector.
All comments will be digested into a report, and be used to develop MentorSET Corporate, an extension of the current WES scheme. Keep an eye on the WES website for updates!

Call for sponsors: WES Student Conference 2018
We are looking for sponsors to exhibit at the WES Student Conference. A great opportunity to support future engineers and meet 150 female engineering undergraduates by exhibiting at the WES Student Conference.
This is an annual two-day event, bringing together students, academics and early-mid career engineers & colleagues to explore career options and pathways to technical leadership.

'Why aren't there more women in science?' Podcast
WES Council Member Dr Jess Wade recently took part in the
Science Focus Podcast,
the weekly podcast from
BBC Focus
magazine.
Speaking alongside Dr Suzie Imber, Angela Saini and Dr Aoife Hunt, Jess looked to address why so few women are pursuing careers in science, the difficulties women face in the industry, and what can be done to get more students taking up scientific subjects.To find out more or to listen to the podcast please go

On Wednesday 5th September the WES London Cluster organised a sold out seminar on the theme of Women in STEM Leadership. Hosted by WES partner Arcadis, the event included empowering presentations from executive coach Penny Williams, and WES Council Member and leadership consultant Jay Surti. Committee Meetings - Search for Permanent Venue
The WES London cluster is searching for a permanent venue to host all our monthly meetings in 2019. If you think your company can support us please get in touch. We'd also like to thank Firstco (WES Corporate Partner) for hosting the WES London Cluster committee meeting on 29th September.
If you're located in London or visiting the city, our meetings are open to all WES members. Our next meetings are on 3 October at AECOM and 1
November at the TFL offices. Meetings are open to all WES members.

2019 FDM everywoman in Tech Awards
Now in its ninth year, the 2019 FDM everywoman in Technology Awards will uncover and celebrate the most inspirational women working within STEM industries, demonstrating the vast range of career opportunities that the sector has to offer for women.

NECR conference 2018

The NECR conference offers the opportunity to meet industry-leading employers, as well as employability workshops and the Women in Engineering Forum. The latter takes place on Friday 30 November between 11:30 - 13:00 which includes a networking lunch. It's free to attend.

'Who Wants to be an Engineer?' Survey
WES has received a request from Natalie Martin, a student at Brunel University who is currently completing a distance learning MSc in Engineering Management.
Her dissertation 'Who Wants To Be An Engineer' focuses on female engineers asking what originally motivated them to pursue engineering (and what still does); how they are retained/supported within the industry; and their views on the promotion prospects that exist for them in this exciting field.

Parenting and Employment in Wales seminar
Hive the community for modern working, brings together employers from across the sectors in Wales to share
knowledge, connect and network.
In partnership with British Airways Maintenance Cardiff, ABM Women's Network and DTCC, Hive will be organising the seminar 'The Parenthood Penalty' - looking at how working parents are penalised for trying to combine work and family life.

This is Engineering Digital Campaign
'This is Engineering' is a major campaign by the Royal Academy of Engineering to change perceptions of the profession. It will begin with a series of high-impact videos to challenge young people's views of engineering and highlight the role engineering plays in society.

Workforce diversity in the STEM sector is a major challenge. In fact just 13% of the entire UK STEM workforce is female. How do we attract more girls and women into STEM?

WindAid Peru Volunteer Programme
WindAid is a non-profit organisation focused on building wind turbines to provide clean and renewable energy solutions to some of the seven million Peruvians living without grid electricity, and directly affected by the increasing effects of climate change. They are currently recruiting for their WindAid programme. This four week volunteer programme offers an opportunity to learn about design, construction, and installation of a wind turbine and see its direct impact on rural families and communities.

Engineering Council Review
The Engineering Council is currently carrying out a five-yearly review of its Standards. A key purpose of the review is to ensure that the Standards remain fit-for-purpose as engineering and the wider world changes.
Consultation is central to this review and they are keen to hear from anyone, or any group, who has an interest in the Standards or how they work. Areas covered in the consultation include:
- Key Principles
- The UK Standard for Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC)
- Accreditation of higher education programmes
- Approval of qualifications and apprenticeships
- Proposals for the recognition of higher apprenticeships.
