Historical Tidbit:
Telephone History

The telephone was first invented by an Italian inventor, Antonio Meucci in 1849. Alexander Graham Bell acquired the first successful patent for the telephone in 1876. He brought it to mass market through his company, AT&T (American Telegraph and Telephone Company). Telephones were initially used for single person to person communication. It wasn't until the invention of the first telephone exchange in 1878 that telephones were used to connect with multiple people. After that the switchboard was introduced. Initially, woman would serve as operators, switching wires on a switchboard to connect callers to the people they wanted to speak with.

Today we have digital phones that transmit information via radio waves as 0's and 1's. Digital phones can transfer more information at once, and are less error prone. These phones allow for communication with multiple people at once.

For an interactive historical telephone experience, check out the Rockland Telephone History Center on Saturday, February 17th from 1:00PM to 5:00PM . 83 East Water Street, Unit E-229, Rockland, MA. Telephone Operators will be on duty to connect calls from 5 switchboards that are connected to the displayed phones from 1900 thru 1990. Everything is hands on, interactive, fun. Talk on the phones, sit at the switchboards and see what it was like to be the operator and connect calls.

As a social entrepreneurship
the Buzz Around is all about the “why.”

Why create a news source focused on one community’s good news?

When a community feels good about itself, it has more pride, and when a human feels good about their existence, they feel empowered.

In a world where we are constantly barraged with negativity, violence and seemingly insurmountable problems, the Buzz Around provides a positive vision…

People ARE doing good things. Humans can be kind and loving. It is good to live in a democracy, where each person has power.

How to we engage with our community in a way that will improve our own life and the life of those around us? In the Buzz Around, our reader finds positive stories about their friends and neighbors and action that we can take to be part of the solution.
Thank you for reading and for the time you take to make our world a better place, one good story at a time. ~Jacquie
