Cornerstone Series
We're excited to announce our new workshop series for Fall 2017! The Cornerstone Series is a set of four hands-on workshops that explore some of the foundations of engaging and effective face-to-face and online classrooms.
- Enhancing Distance Course Design Using the OSCQR Rubric
- Making the 4 Connections in Your Classroom
- Making an Impact with Collaborative Learning
- Creating a Course Orientation with Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
Every workshop has two parts, and each part is offered twice (once in the morning, once in the evening). In addition, one of the workshops is offered fully online. Faculty who attend both parts of a workshop (or fully complete the online workshop) and demonstrate an innovation they've made to their online or face-to-face classroom at a Series Showcase can earn CEUs or a stipend. When will these changes take place?
- The mobile app named "Blackboard" is designed for student use and is available now.
- The mobile app named "Blackboard Instructor" is designed for instructor use and offers increased functionality. It will be available by the end of August 2017.

What can we learn from comic books that we might use in our teaching?
Brian Cremins, Associate Professor of English, says that there's something for everyone in this class. "We'll be covering Marnie Galloway's Particle/Wave, an autobiographical comic grounded in physics and cosmology; John Porcellino's The Hospital Suite, in which he writes openly about his experiences with OCD and anxiety; and biologist Jay Hosler's Clan Apis, which is not only about the life cycle of honey bees (the focus of Hosler's research) but also one of the best modern variations on Joseph Campbell's hero's journey that I've ever read. We'll also read classics like Art Spiegelman's Maus, his memoir about his parents' survival of the Holocaust. So my colleagues will not only get a good sampling of the kind of work being done today, but also think about how they might be inspired by the verbal/visual strategies these writers, artists, and scientists have used in their work."
