SWCD Delegates for the Annual Business Meeting at Conference
Each Soil and Water Conservation District in good standing (fully paid annual dues) with the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Inc. will have the opportunity to send one SWCD Supervisor delegate to the Annual Conference business meeting. The vote of the district will be cast by the delegate or the alternate at the meeting.
Registration for the delegates is required and must be received by January 4, 2019.

Supervisor Scholarships for Annual Conference
due by November 13
Scholarships are available to SWCD Supervisors (not Associates) whose District’s budget restrictions will not permit them to attend the annual conference. The IASWCD will award scholarships depending on available funds. Only one application per District will be accepted for consideration each year.

NACD Announces Breakout Topics for 73rd Annual Meeting
The conference will take place February 2-6, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas and will feature sixteen breakout sessions focusing on the work of conservation districts and their partners. The sessions, which sometimes feature several speakers are aligned into four themed tracks: Communications; District Operations, Member Services and Partnerships; Natural Resources Policy and Protection; and Stewardship and Education. State awards over $1 million for
water quality improvement projects
INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 26, 2018) — The State Soil Conservation Board (
SSCB
) awarded more than $1 million to 32 Soil and Water Conservation Districts for projects designed to improve water quality across the state. This funding is part of the Clean Water Indiana (
CWI
) grant program, which is administered by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. “This year alone, Clean Water Indiana has supported 373 conservation projects and prevented more than 63 million pounds of sediment from entering our waterways,” said Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Update on the USPS Soil Health Stamp Proposal
The Indiana State Dept. of Agriculture’s USPS Soil Health stamp proposal is closer to becoming a reality. Ideas for future stamps have to be reviewed by the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee and each year they receive thousands of letters for new stamps. The Soil Health stamp has been moved into the additional review and consideration category. This is only the first step in an, on average, three year process. The ISDA proposal was submitted with 70 separate letters and over 700 signatures, representing 44 states and 2 territories. Your support ensured that the national aspect of improving our soils was clearly shared with the committee.

NRCS Announces Application Deadline to Protect and Restore Critical Wetlands in Southwest Indiana
State Conservationist Jerry Raynor announced that USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is entering its third and final year of a project with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to provide financial and technical assistance to private landowners and other eligible entities through the Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership (WREP). As part of this partnership program, wetland easements and restorations are available in the Lower Wabash and White River watersheds in the southwest part of the state to address wildlife habitat and improve water quality for fish and waterfowl.

As our knowledge about soils has increased, the answers to these questions have evolved. Just as botanists have studied plants as part of nature, pedologists have studied soils as part of nature. Soils differ from each other based on color, mineralogy, age, depth, and lateral boundaries with neighboring soils.
