Faculty, staff, and students in Grades EK-12 will gather in Merovick Gymnasium for an 85
th
Birthday Bash on Friday, September 21, the exact day our school opened 85 years ago.
The celebration will include a pep rally, remarks from a distinguished alumnus who was here on Laguna's opening day 85 years ago, spirit giveaways, a taco lunch with rice and fixings provided by
Vallefresh
local farm fresh catering, a gluten-free birthday cake generously donated by
Lilac Patisserie
, cupcakes provided by Erin Khodabandehlou, and a photo booth created by Lower School Art Teacher Courtney Guay and our Lower School students.
Locally Grown Kids lunch has been canceled for this day.

School photos will be taken by Brad Elliott Photography this year.
- Every student will be photographed for the yearbook.
- Ordering photo packages is optional.
- All orders must be placed and paid for on or before day of the photo.
- Payment can be made by check or PayPal.
- Middle and Upper School students: please be sure to have your photo taken in Ruston Amphitheatre between 8:15AM and 1PM.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEANUP DAY SUCCESS!
|
|
Saturday’s California Coastal Cleanup Day was a great success! This was the 9th year for Laguna Blanca School hosting the table at Miramar/Hammonds Beach. A big THANKS to Lower School Science Instructor Ms. Svedlund for spearheading our participation each year. The coast is cleaner thanks to our noble Owl beach combers!

LAGUNA REPRESENTS AT CHALLENGE SUCCESS CONFERENCE
|
|
Laguna representatives Lolli Lucas, Lindsay Woodard, and Kendra and
Izzy Sabino '19 attended the 2018 Fall Challenge Success Conference at Stanford last weekend.
Challenge Success is an organization that partners with schools, families, and communities to promote a broad definition of success and to implement research-based strategies so that kids are healthy and engaged with learning.
Workshops that the team attended included:
- Teaching for Engagement
- Rethinking Homework
- The Well-Balanced Student
- Mind, Brain, and Education Research
- Designing and Implementing Project-Based Curricula
After the workshops, the team met with Laguna's Challenge Success Coach to review steps Laguna has already put in place to make life less stressful for its students (i.e., our 8-day rotating schedule) and organized an action plan for additional elements to be implemented throughout this year. NEW CLASS TRIP PHOTOS ARE HERE

We enjoyed our first Friday Fun of the school year last Friday, 9/14. Since we have been learning about our sense of sight, students made sun catchers. Kindergarteners used their fine motor skills to place a row of mostly translucent pony beads around the bottom of mini aluminum pie tins.

FIRST GRADERS PERFORM SILLY SENTENCE SURGERY!
|
|
Last Friday, 9/14, we became doctors… sentence doctors! We have been learning about how to identify and write complete sentences.
I told the students that we would be working on sentence “patients” who needed to be stitched together. We put on imaginary gloves and real medical face masks (because everything is better with dress up!) I passed out two sentence parts to each student, along with some twine “stitches.”
Our doctors then identified which part of the sentence was the naming part and which was the telling part before stitching them together.

The news of Laguna student
Rhami Zeini '20 finding and returning a purse with $10,000 in it has gone viral this week--reaching as far as the UK! Laguna Lower School students got to hear personally from Rhami about this inspiring show of character on Tuesday, 9/17 at their Tecolote Tuesday Assembly. Thank you, Rhami, for doing the right thing when nobody was looking. We are so proud of you!

TY TROSKY '19 LEADS LAGUNA BLANCA TO 8-MAN FOOTBALL WIN

Ty Trosky '19 threw three touchdown passes and ran for score, leading the Laguna Blanca 8-man football team to a 60-36 win over Coast Union last Friday, 9/14 at home.
The Owls are 2-0 on the season.
Josh Baron '19 scored four touchdowns for Laguna Blanca. He caught passes of 34 and 56 yards and had scoring runs of 2 and 65 yards.
