On September 15th the largest storm of 2018 hammered the Northern Philippines causing massive  structural damage, flooding, landslides and loss of life.

Specifically, the small mining community of Ucab, Itogon, Benguet located south of Baguio City (where we base our operations) had a massive landslide burying 100's of small scale miners. Current casualties from the storm are at 80 people, with nearly 50 miners still missing.

We are happy to report that all of our farmers and families are safe. However, one farmer's home was completely destroyed in the landslide in Ucab and all of our farmers in the region have experienced structural damages and 90-95% crop loss.

Destroyed Greenhouse at BASS Farmer Anita's Farm
in Daclan, Tublay, Bengue
Last week we launched a Longterm Recovery Fund to support our partner farmers impacted by the typhoon. After the immediate recovery efforts are complete, Global Seed Savers will still be on the ground to assist farmers as they rebuild their lives and revive farm production, which includes ensuring access to locally adapted seeds that can withstand climate change.

Thanks to your generosity we have raised nearly $2,000 in one week to support the recovery. We will be accepting donations for the recovery through the end of October.

Seed School at  Philippine Permaculture Association Advanced Design Course

Last month we were invited to teach Seed School as part of the Philippine Permaculture Association (PPA) week-long Advanced Design Course.

Karen (our Country Manager) and two BASS Farmers, Ester and Letty (both graduates of the Basic Permaculture Design Course), facilitated the Seed School for 20 participants and also attended the week-long Advanced Design Course. Since 2016, we have helped 6 BASS Farmers receive their Permaculture Design Certificates.

We are excited PPA included us in their curriculum and we will be facilitating an Introduction to Permaculture Design Course for all Benguet Association of Seed Saver (BASS) Farmers in the coming months.
