SUPER BOWL LIII PREVIEW : New England Patriots (AFC) vs Los Angeles Rams (NFC)
By virtue of their respective back-to-back, thrilling overtime National Football League Conference Championship victories on Sunday, January 20, the New England Patriots will play the Los Angeles Rams in the fifty-third Super Bowl game on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. In yesterday evening's American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game, the Patriots (13-5), led by five-time Super Bowl champion and 19-year veteran quarterback Tom Brady, defeated the host Kansas City Chiefs by an overtime score of 37-31 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Brady (#12 / left) is a graduate of the University of Michigan and is seen here in 2016 during the Patriots' game against the San Francisco 49ers in heavy rain at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The Chiefs (also 13-5) are led by first-year rookie phenom quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a graduate of Texas Tech University. Earlier yesterday afternoon during the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship Game, the Rams (15-3), led by third-year quarterback Jared Goff, defeated the host New Orleans Saints by an overtime score of 26-23 at the Superdome in New Orleans, LA. Goff (#16 / right) is a graduate of UC Berkeley / Cal and is seen here in 2015 during the Bears' game against the Stanford Cardinal at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, CA. (
Both Brady and Goff are San Francisco Bay Area products as Brady is a San Mateo resident and attended Junipero Serra High School while Goff grew up in Marin County and attended Marin Catholic High School in Greenbrae.)
The Saints (14-4) are led by 18-year veteran quarterback Drew Brees, a graduate of Purdue University. The 2019 Super Bowl LIII game between the Patriots and Rams will be played on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 3:30 p.m. PT and will be televised by CBS and streamed on
CBSSports.com
. For the first time in over a decade, the AFC champion Patriots opened as an underdog in the Super Bowl, with Las Vegas installing the NFC champion Rams as a one-point favorite in early betting.

Golden State guard Stephen Curry shrugs after hitting his fourth consecutive 3-pointer in the span of 2:37 in the third quarter as the Warriors defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 147-140, at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Wednesday, January 16. Curry finished with 41 points.

Mr. Cousins returns...
At the Golden State Warriors' Media Day, prior to the start of the season, it was unclear when the ultra-talented Boogie Cousins would resume his playing career and what kind of impact he might have on the game. After his debut against the Los Angles Clippers on Friday evening, questions fell away. In 15 minutes of action, Cousins tallied
14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists and while he was on the floor, Golden State outscored the Clippers by 21 points.
The former All-Star may be the "X" factor needed to assure another NBA championship for the Bay Area.

Sonoma Raceway -- 8th annual John's March Against Stomach Cancer
John's March at Sonoma Raceway raises more than $23,000
Eight-year total surpasses $133,000 raised for Gastric Cancer
The unique fundraiser generated $23,670 for No Stomach for Cancer
, bringing the event's eight-year total to more than $133,000 raised for gastric cancer research and awareness.
Participants ranging from competitive runners to families, including children on bikes and in strollers, enjoyed a spin around the 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course on foot during the event, which is held in honor of John Cardinale, the long-time Sonoma Raceway spokesman who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with stomach cancer.
"Events like John's March are a critical part of sustaining this organization. Without this event in particular, it would be difficult to do the things we do and gives us the extra visibility we wouldn't get otherwise," said No Stomach for Cancer executive director Jon Florin. "There is something to be said about honoring someone's legacy as it reinforces the need to promote education, awareness and prevention around gastric cancer."
Many of the participants in John's March have been directly affected by the disease, the third most common cause of cancer deaths globally. Participants came out to honor not only Cardinale but spouses, parents and friends who have succumbed to stomach cancer.
No Stomach For Cancer is a non-profit group which works to increase awareness and education about stomach cancer, provide a support network for affected families and support research efforts for screening, early detection, treatment and prevention of stomach cancer.
Donations can still be made in honor of John's March at
www.NoStomachForCancer.org
. Sonoma Raceway will host its 9
th
annual John's March Against Stomach Cancer in January 2020. For more information or to get involved, contact Diana Brennan at

Sports Prep Star -- Erica Miller
Carondelet-Concord -- Basketball -- Senior
Facing the state's No. 1-ranked basketball team by CalHiSports.com, Pinewood-Los Altos Hills -- a program known for its 3-point shooting prowess -- Erica Miller gave the Panthers a taste of their own medicine. The 5-foot-9 shooting guard sank six 3's and finished with 20 points as Carondelet earned the upset with a 67-59 win on Jan. 9. It was Pinewood's first loss of the season and it moved Carondelet (16-2 through Jan. 17) to No. 7 in the state rankings. The Cougars could climb even higher based on the result of their Jan. 21 showdown with No. 3 Archbishop Mitty.
